Strange query:
I have a Cobra with an XR8 Chaser Cluster. I would like to disable the coolant warning light as it is not connected upto the coolant reservoir tank. With the sensor not connected the warning light constantly flashes and would like to disable it. I know that the sensor shares the same wire as the tacho so can't simply disconnect it from the cluster. What is the best solution to stop the light coming on? Is it case of tracing the wires back from the sensor to a relay and disconnecting it there? As the car is not a daily runner not concerned that the light does'nt work (water temperature gauge already fitted) |

If this were the case i would be tempted to simply remove the globe from the instrument cluster.
This way, no annoying flashing light but not completely removing functionality so if (for whatever reason) you ever wanted to reconnect..... Or have i missed the point? lol

Unable to remove the globe as it is a small LED that seems to be soldered in.
The coolant reservoir I have fitted is an american chrome aftermarket affair and I was unable to connect the sensor to it. Bacause the car is only used once or twice a week I regularly inspect the coolant levels etc so have no need for the warning light. Thanks for your reply |

Hmmmm.... interesting. What year is the dash from?
Lol, could run 12v through it, that'd sort out any pesky LEDs.... Either that or could dummy the actual sensor to think coolent level is acceptable. AFAIK its an on/off mechanism i.e. doesnt read resistance depending on coolant level - theres either enough or there isnt.

Great minds think alike!!!
The sensor itself is a plastic float mechanism (shuts when immersed and opens when not - hence light) Tried taping the float up, but light continued to be on! so must be sensitive to water or something. Then thought simply dismantle the float (cut it off). Still light comes on. Must be some relay I can attach to the live wire and earth that replicates a sensor. Thanks for the prompt replies so far. |

Its a simple circuit wire goes wire goes out, both negative or both positive, just short the 2 together. (check polarity of wires first of course)

dellboy that dont work! on my au i changed the coolant bottle to one without a sensor was free ratrher than $200
and the coolant light goes on.... shorted wires no that no work added the old sensor nop that dont work i have a feeling the sensor it self has a resitance built in....liek the steering wheel switches mm i havea spare sensor here.......

Found a link that seems to resolve the issue.

PCC, is the coolant tank metal? I would have a nut welded on the tank and mount the sensor. Its good to know when the coolant is low.

Hi Chef,
It is metal, but is there for show more than anything - the car gets to quite a few car shows. There is a glass vertical tube on the side of the tank, which shows the water level. Finally, the existing ford float sensor is to wide for the tank. Other than that it was a good idea. Frank, Do you understand that wiring diagram yet????? |
