Chips alter the EEC programing, in particular the AF ratio and timing tables. Generally factory programing is pretty safe so you can normally add a fair bit of timing and lean the engine up a bit giving better power, even more can be done if you always run premium unleaded. Off the shelf chips are generally pretty basic, as I said just add a bit of timing and take a bit of fuel out. Custom chips like chiptorque and unichip (not technically a chip but same result) will tune the EEC to your particular engine giving a better overall tune. IMO unless you have done a few mods like cam, head work etc then the chip wont give you a huge increase and I would be spending the money elsewhere first.

Throw a cam at it first. then get the chip to tune it. You'll be much happier! Cam and springs are a reasonably cheap mod for a 6.
