its the timing and fuel maps in the ecu that make the tickford xr6 ecu different to suit the xr6 cam..

So the EL XR6 cam is more similar to the std AU cam than the std EL cam?

I like later upshifts and earlier downshifts, but prefer stock shift speed. Not fussed though unless the difference is big, then i would want to investigate.

actually the au xr6 cam is similar to the e series xr6 cam.
but the std au cam is a bit different to the others.
here are some of the specs..
the std au cam
intake opens @6 deg btdc
intake closes @64 deg abdc
exhaust opens @66 deg bbdc
exhaust closes @18 deg atdc..

the std 4.o cam
intake opens @16 deg btdc
intake closes @63 deg abdc
exhaust opens @62 deg bbdc
exhaust closes @14 deg atdc

the au xr6.
intake opens @14 deg btdc
intake closes @68 deg abdc
exhaust opens @56 deg bbdc
exhaust closes @24 deg atdc..

the e series xr6 cam.
intake opens @14 deg btdc
intake closes @66 deg abdc
exhaust opens @62 deg bbdc
exhaust closes @18 deg atdc

From that the std AU cam is more similar to the e-series XR6 cam than the std e-series cam. So in that respect i might be better to go for an EL fairmont ECU or EL XR6 ECU, as you say.

But what about the other factors? My main priority is maximum fuel efficiency. No pinging problems is nice and part of that (but i'm mainly running LPG, so its not quite as important as it would be otherwise). Other than that normal smooth auto gearshifting is my preference. Earlier downshifts and later upshifts would be nice due to the big wheels effect on the final drive ratio.

I have received the following information. It seems good info to me.

Quote:
Only the EF series II Fairmont Ghia and the EL Fairmont Ghia had the XR6 engine and ECU equivalent.

You need the EL Fairmont Ghia ECU . . . If you can get one do it. I have one in the EB running the EL engine. Otherwise, any EL Auto ECU will do the job.

It also seems pertinent to consider the final drive ratio and character of the donor vehicle, as the shift points will(?) be chosen by ford in some relation to that. I am told the EL fairmont uses 3.23 and the EL GLi uses 3.08.

And the EL Fairmont Ghia uses the 3.45 diff.

When I had the 3.27 gears and the EL Ghia Tickford ECU, the auto maps worked ok. They were a little out of synch at times, only really noticeable to the really picky when slowing down to a stop.

The Tickford ECU will kickdown more readily and will rev out further, as well as providing more midrange punch. Mind you I have a modded intake, Paccies, highflow cat and 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust.

My repair manual indicates the same upshift points for the standard EB 3.27 and XR6 3.45, and it's not overly clear but seemingly different kickdown points (95LE versus 91LE XR6). I don't have information for the EL. Is that what you mean?

Could a tickford ecu controlling a non-tickford motor allow it to over-rev?

Another point, i figure the ecu relies on the speedo drive gear to know the vehicle speed. So if the drive gear isn't giving the correct speed due to altered wheels and/or axle ratio, this will have an effect on the shift points. The effect may be positive or negative, depending partly on the drivers preference.(?)

In that case, what do you see as the differences if any between the fairmont ghia and xr6 ecu's? It seems they have the same motor and diff ratio.

To summarise:
EL fairmont ghia tickford 3.45
EL XR6 tickford 3.45
EL fairmont std4.0L 3.23
EL GLi std4.0L 3.08
