Hi, i just bought myself a 1977 to 1979 4 door escort sedan.Is in very good nic.It has a worked 2L 4spd in it.
Now my plans are for an engine swap.Keeping in mind i would like to register it one day with the motor conversion. So i was wondering if i could get a 5L carby windsor engineered into it in NSW???is it possible... The other option i like it dropping in a rotary, not fuel injected just a carby engine maybe a 10a or 12a or even maybe a 13b,is this possible and what sort of work would i be looking at and could i get this engineered in NSW??? If i go down the rotary road what other things would i need to complete the conversion??? Cheers Bryan

I dont think you can get a V8 escort registered in NSW anymore (or victoria),
At a minimum youll want a good brake upgrade (CRS and hoppers do kits) or get something custom made up (you may run into issues with a pedantic enginner if you do this though - so consult one first) and a stronger diff (shortened falcon or hilux), as well as the usual mounts, tailshaft, gearbox, radiator etc etc to suit the rotary.

thanks guys for your in put...
i have found out that you cannot legally engineer a v8 into a escort in NSW,so that idea has gone. i also did some research on a rotary conversion, big dollars there.also if i tryed to pick up a rebuildable rotor its still very dear to rebuild them. So i have come to a conclusion,im going to turbo the 2L pinto motor.A blo through setup.I can manage this on a small budget of $1000 all running. Not including the engineers cerificate or rego yet. My parts list are a T28 turbo with internal waste gate or simialr from a 200sx,a 140gph pump (low pressure/high volume),using maybe 2 x side draft 45mm webers or single one. Also will be just making a log style turbo manifold which will keep costs down..

i was watching some new zealand rally on tv a while back and saw an escort with a relatively new focus engine transplant, not sure what gearbox he was using as the escort is a nth sth and the focus a east west, but if you wanted to go the efi route it would be worth looking into, the owner of the car said he uses focus engines because they are easy to get power out of. couldn't imagine an engineers being too difficult either.
cheers |

go a 99-02 focus zetec motor..
not the most powerful, but relatively easy to mod, and almost bullet proof little things

CA18 is far easier to fit in an escort engine bay then an SR20. either one will need a new trans tunnel. but the SR is very tall

you can go a 2.3 ohc from a mustang bolts to the 2.0 box, need to mod the sump and engine mounts
looks almost exactly like a 2.0 just slightly bigger came in efi, efi turbo or carby, heres my carby 2.3 from my old mk2 escort, 350 holley bolts to std manifold heaps of hot up parts in the US have a look @ esslinger racing they have 3.0l stroker kits etc and a volvo b234f twin cam heads bolts on with mods http://www.esslingeracing.com/home.htm volvo head swap http://www.merkurtech.com/merkurtech/te ... tem045.php |

Here's a pic of what the Nissan SR20DET conversion looks like in a 77 escort. Not that expensive either as you can buy a front cut which has motor, turbo, gearbox, ecu and wiring lume all included.
