Hi All,
A workmate of mine has a 1990 KE Laser that cranks, but does not start. It is CFI and figure a fairly straight forward one to figure out. First thing I checked was spark - thought it may have been the coil. Checked spark from the coil and it does indeed spark, perhaps a little weak, but nonetheless there was an arc. Then checked dizzy cap contacts and rotor button...a little corroded but again there was spark. Checked the leads and yep you guessed it - spark. Pulled out one of the spark plugs - it smelled very much like fuel, so figured fuelling side of things was AOK. I am a little bit unsure what to check next - it all *appears* ok. Figured a weak or poor spark would still *start* the car - correct me if I am wrong here ? I do know that the spark plugs have not been changed since Feb '08 - car is driven roughly 30 minutes a day (2 X 15 min trips). Today, the first port of call is changing spark plugs, then if that does not fix anything - will get some new leads, dizz cap, rotor button assy and maybe a coil (despite already changing it with another used one for testings' sake). Any help appreciated 4cyl laser gurus Cheers, Steve |

Have got a second-hand coil and tried it - same results *weird*
Can't push start it Geoff - it's an auto I feel bad because it's a workmate who relies on this car - we've just spent $100 on ignition components and it hasn't fixed the problem. I've been told the mechanical fuel pumps fail on these things - anyone heard of this too ? |

Sounds like the fuel pump might be the next item to look at... as reading this most of the ignition componants have been replaced or looked at...

Yeah thing is Geoff - the spark plugs are moist and smell of fuel...so I think the fuelling side of things is AOK *shrugs*.
It is an enigma so far...a frustrating one at that ! |
