why are you only worried about the cold number?
your engine spends more time hot then cold. |

not so much worried about the cold side. Just didnt want to confine it to only asking about say a 10w-40 oil, more interested in the broader picture.
the motor is an au1 with 70000km and wont be stock for to much longer. What do you suggest?

i use 5w30 in my AU2
and used it in my old EF aswell. it's to much in fuel to use a 40 or 50 |

I have ALWAYS used 10w 40 Magnatec in my EF Fairmont which did 305,000klms
Just pulled motor out for a freshen as it was out anyway as all the Cam Chain Guides broke mechanic was very impressed with the internals - i told him it was due to the Magnatec - he laughed

The higher the number doesn't mean a thicker oil, it just means that it protects the internals better at higher temperatures. Even if the oil was a little thicker, it's going to do diddly-squat to your fuel economy, you really would be splitting hairs to see the difference. |

Try loosing 100km per tank going from 5w30 to 15w40. then going back to 5w30 and getting that 100km per tank back. you're a little off with the second number. it all relates back to SAE grading, a 5w30 when cold has the properties of a cold SAE 5, when hot it has the properties of a HOT SAE 30. and xW40 has the properties of a HOT SAE 40 regardless of what the first number says. There is a reason engines make more power with thinner oils, reduced oil drag, the pump doesn't have to work as hard to move the oil ect. Viscosity is a measure of the oils resistance to flow. Nothing more then less. You're second mistake is thinking the viscosity of the oil is the main factor in its ability to 'protect' components. |

Is it really that bad to swap and change oils? I've read that if you've used a certain oil, that you should stick with it...
My AU VCT engine (supercharged) has been run its whole life on Penrite HPR15, which I think is a 15w60. This was recommended by the engine builder who fitted the supercharger. This seems really quite viscous to me? From memory I think the standard engine requires 5w30. I would like to experiment with some lighter weight oils (for economy and power), specifically a good quality 5w30 oil. I've not tried yet as I've heard that swapping around is a bad idea... Anyone know the reality of this? What are the facts? Joe
