Would I need to recalibrate my speedometer if I change my rims from 14"to 15"?
Its on my XH Ute. Is it just me or do people avoid replying to my posts????????? If so WHY? |

Well I didnt recalibrate mine when I went from 15" to 18" rims
So I wouldnt worry about it ... All else fails get a mate/missus to drive behind you as you do exactly 50 on ur speedo, thats a rough way of knowing if you will need to get it calibrated. But you will probly find there wont be a problem. (Doing the above test with my brother, going from 15" to 18" rims my speedo is now approx 3 km/h higher then the speed im actually going.) Which is great for coppers, when I think im speeding im actually not |

I went 15's to 17's, and was told by Ian Diffen's that a recalib wasn't necessary. However, as Ace said ...I have actually noticed a slight difference, as I have a GPS unit that always gives me a speed 2 km/hr lower than what my speedo is telling me ...and GPS's are pretty accurate!

dont you work it out by doing the % increase
when i did my wheels form like 20 or 19 up to 30" hjad like a 16% increase in size... so what ever my speedo says i add 16% and thats my actuall speed so in an 80 zone my speedo says, 70 (or just below) 70 * 1.16 (adds 16%) and im doing 81... to do 70 i sit on 60 to do 60 i sit on about 53 and so on and so on

you dont have to recalibrate anything..
the overall rotating diametre is the same, bigger rim vs lower profile.. ie.. say over all diametre is 20inches, with 15in rims you will have 5in worth of tyre.. 18in rims you will have 2in worth of tyre..etc etc the speedo wont change.. if you changed diff gears then yeah you would have to, but not with rim change..

Well its kind of the done thing... Going to a lower profile with the bigger rim will result in some overall diameter change but only couple of %.

how do u actually recalibrate the speedo when your changing the size of the wheels. i am looking at upgrading to 18's and have been pondering this for a few days.
so where do u go to do this??

you can get an electronic ratio box which changes the signal of the speedo wire, but im not sure if it'll work in falcons, as the speed signal goes to the ecu first.
the other way is to change the gear in the gearbox (also in the tech documents is the correct method).

Rim size dose not matter. As long as the rolling radius of the tyre is the same as the original ie. 195/75X14 is the approx equal of an 205/65X15 or a 225/60X15. No speedo recal is needed.

so where do u go to do this?? you wont need a recalibration, just keep the profile/rim size aspect the same.. think 18's run 235/40/18 dont they? or is it 235/35/18? either way, theres a calculators on the net which tell you.. so no, if you keep decreasing profile you wont need to change the speedo

my exact thoughts too! AFAIK only EA/EB's had 14's? EBII or ED & above all came with 15's?
