I have a 1988 EA FAIRMONT GHIA 3.9 MPEFI, that has a hunting problem could someone suggest where i check first.

The engine Hunts from 650rpm to 1200rpm, neutral and park with engine at operating temp, does not hunt at all when cold.

Fuel enconomy is pretty sad too 15.5 L / 100km.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Anzac..............

Just in case you do happen to return

Settle down! people don't visit this site constantly, sometimes you will get an instant response, and sometimes it may take awhile.

However with a reply like that no one is going to be very helpful!

just in case you do happen to come back on, try disconnecting the battery for about 3 minutes then reconnect it, disconnect the power steering pressure switch and bridge it out. Start the engine and run it in drive for 1 minute ( one full minute that is) and reconnect the switch adn see if this does anything. make sure you have the car at operating temp when you do it though. This is how to set the idle on the cfi models but sometimes will work on mpi engines also. If it is no better it might be time to look further into it because i have had this problem and a map sensor fixed it for a while but then it was hunting again so i am not exactly sure
