I don't mind the work, i just hate dealing with the WANKERS that own the cars. No concept of how long it takes to repair things, and think that just because it's a $15 dollar part it should only be a 5min job to fit it.

HMM i'd like to see anyone change a rear main seal in 5mins drive in drive out

well well wankers hey! more then likely you will find is that the problem does arrive when shops will quote from the mtaq recconmended hours book or bible, then rather then the time it took to really do the job !!!
to take 4.5 hrs to do a gearbox change it seems to look like they done there apprenticeship at there local council, if it took one of my blokes to take that long to do that when i had my shop they would have gotten the a*** reel quick

You won't find one of those books at my workshop. They're a crock of s**t when it come to times.


I give estimates based on previous jobs, and state very clearly the the price is subject to dismantle and inspection. I'm almost getting to the point of not giving estimates or quotes at all.
It'll be "If you want it fixed and want it fixed properly you'll pay what it costs"
if you don't like it, take your car somewhere els. i won't miss the work or the dealing with the people that take the car to some one els. BUT I'll be a hell of a lot less stressed from not have to deal with them.

the WANKERS are the ones that ask for price, then after being given the price then complain that their car is only worth $1000 so why am i charging them $800 for a repair. FFS

or based on the price you give them, have the work done, then complain at the end about the price. Even though it is the same or cheaper then the estimate whey were given.

haha my last gearbox change took me about 2 hours
and that was with the car parked on the street with the front up on ramps and me being underneath it
so i dounno where they get 4.5 hours to do it when its like half the time in a workshop cus its sraight up on the hoist and then the box jack in and out simple done


and so called "mechanics that rea da book to tell u how long it will take u to change a gearbox would be better off weeding the garden for nanny

and another thing
yes i do agree alot of people do assume because a part is cheap it is easy to fit

first time i ever attempted a gearbox change in these falcons took me 3 days just to get the bloody top starter motor bolt out but its only a $2 part lol

good luck finding a place to do the job for $176 (@ 88 p/h)....
keep looking and calling every place in the phonebook and then when u do find this mythical place let me know the name

I also find it hard to believe that anyone (short of weightlifter) can lift a 80kg gearbox into place whilst lying under a car up on jack stands...

yes ive done many like this...it takes a couple of hours of frigging around just to get the car up high enough using crap lying around like spare tyres/wood etc....

next thing youll tell us u can get a motor in and out in 3hours and that mechanics shouldnt charge more than $200 for it

i was not haveing a direct go at anyone, but there a lot of mechanic workshops out there that do use the hours books, AND yes there are alot customers who do need slapping, ive been on both sides of the fence ive trouble with customers and other trade shops were they whinge an b**ch about the price an turn around an still put a 100% mark up on the item for instance we fitted a 3.5 litre v6 an 5 speed with a bmw irs rear end in a gemini . yes i do no for a fact the other work shop whacked a 100% mark up as the end customer turned out to be married to my cousin an his invoice turned exactly double of ours an they didnt even touch the bloody thing, so the moral of the storey is there are good an bad on both sides of the fence

yes there are some serious rip-off c**nts out there...

a certain northern melbourne workshop that specialises in turbo VLs comes to mind....

try an almost $20,000 bill for a engine rebuild on a mid 90s jackaroo....I saw the itemised bill and some s**t was crazy like $400 for a part that can be bought at bursons for $30 and it just went on and on....I was gunna post it up on here but legal action was in process

yer i was gunna do the same with this workshop in brizzy but i cant afford the law suit that wouldve followed, we charged this mob just over three grand to supply an fit the irs rear end supply an fit the v6 supply an fit 2.5 mandrel bent exhaust, an fit the five speedthey supplyed the gearbox , an there invoive read something like this
suplly an fit jackaroo 3.5 engine $2500
supply an fit 5 speed $1100
supply an fit custom exhaust $700
supply an fit custom irs diff an suspension $2300
an they rattled on about oils an other fliuds , so them pricks made over three grand for makeing a couple of phone calls an they still b**ch about my price an to add insult to injury they got paid by the customer the same day he picked up the car an it took those a*** holes over a month to pay me

yeah my bad, i jumped a bit at that one.

on the up side, i've got alot of customers who trust me and never ask for a price befor the works done. a few have had quotes on the same work AFTER paying my bill, i was cheaper. as far as i know, those customers have never bothered to do that again.


there are some people you just can't keep happy, you could do a %100 perfect job and only ask for half the bill to be payed and they would still complain.


and then there are the people that just don't understand whats involved in the job. Our shop being a carby repair and sales specialist copes it good from some people. they come in with a carby in a box that has been sitting for years and has worn shafts, they ask how much to 'fix it up'.
you then tell them that a full rebuild with new shafts and shaft bushes will be $500 (carby in question is a plastic body mikuni from just about any early to mid 90s Mitsubishi) the next comment we get from them is "what, $500 to just throw a few gaskets in it" My next comment is, "Here is a $50 carby kit" two week later they are back asking for the $500 rebuild.

problem is, now that they have pulled it down, lost the accel pump check ball and generally made mess of the thing, it going to be more $500.

i only thought those carby"s were good for throwing at the nieghbours when they give ya the s**t..... and the other good one is they come back in abuseing ya cause its running like a bag of s**t but they fail to mention that he and half of his mates all had turns in trying to tune it .

not a bad carby, they are very good when they are working right.
but parts are getting hard to find.

on the subject of people tampering with things and them complaining.
We have been using nail polish in the all the screw heads, anything that comes back with the nail polish damaged get a bill to fix it

carby repair..a dying art eh..

not a bad trade to be in....apart from the tightass customers that is!
