Hi i recently bought a 2002 XR6 BA manual. T5 i believe.
after reading about the gearbox i am worried it will s**t itself sooner or later and want to start saving to replace it, i want a new/better one reguardless as i intend on dropping a xr6t engine into it. Just wondering if anyone can post a list as to which boxes pretty much bolt right up or am i better off making the T5 stronger somehow. Must be MANUAL boxes. Also if anyone has any idea how much it cost to get a Box from AUS to NZ, please let me know. Thank in advance |

Recently killed my 5th T5 gearbox (2 x XF, 1 x EB, 1x EF, 1 x BA). I'm in the process of coverting my ute to a T56 6 speed. I've sourced one out of a BF Turbo with the long (2.66) first gear, and am having to change my diff gears as well. The V8 box won't fit, but the FG TR6060 out of the N/A or Turbo 6 will also but I will focus on the T56 as thats what I'm using.
I've converted my flywheel and clutch over to the Turbo unit also. 10.5" versus standard 10", plus more clamp force. You will need a new flywheel as that is the only difference, they are still 26 spline. So if your clutch wasn't that bad (mine was murdered as well) you can get away with using that. The CSC line can be bent to suit the T56. I do recommend using an Alloy CSC with extended bleeder ($145 + post from Mal Wood). It makes life bloody easy when bleeding, even by yourself). I'm getting a custom tailshaft made, as my ute came from factory with a single piece shaft. You can get new 2 piece shafts off ebay but they were too expensive for my budget. So I got a slip yoke from Summit (# 2-3-6041X) which is a 1330 uni. The tailshaft will be 3" with 0.083" wall with Strange weld ins and Moog uni joints (all from summit). The rear Moog uni is a 1330-1310 conversion as there is no 1330 flange available that i could find for the AU M78 I have in there. Use the T5 reverse sensor, just screw in place of T56 one. I haven't decided what I'm doing with the reverse lock out solenoid yet. I want to see how hard it is to get into reverse then I'll decide. Options pretty much are; wire it to brake pedal (I don't want to though, in case it interferes), remove it all together, shorten the spring for less pressure (likely route I will take) or get a box from the US (Samaco? ~$100 US) that will make it work like factory.
