My car knocks and carries on when it's been idiling for a while coz she's done 277,000km.
I went to a respected auto parts supplier and told him the prob and he suggested using 20w-60 oil because being thicker it would help quiet the knocks from the bottom end. I asked a mechanic and he confirmed the suggestion so I put the 20-60 oil in and immediately the tappets/lifters started making noises. I drove it for 2 days with the thick oil and got so sick of the tapping noises. It didnt just make these noises at startup. When ever the motor was lower than 1100rpm it was tapping even after a drive. Changed back to 20w-50 and the tapping has decreased noticeably but is still there. Have I done permanent damage? Is there anyway to stop the painful noise of the lifter/tappets?

Yeah dude did ya use Penrite HPR Oils cause if ya didn't that would explain it. If ya did use a Penrite one then go back to HPR 15 and it should help.

don't use engine flush on an engine that old. it will dislodge all the crap and block up filters, the strainer on the oil pick up, the filter in the chain tensioner, block up the valve lash adjusters. also there is no such thing as good quality engine flush, it's only kerosine |

I always use Penrite HPR 20w - 60 oil in my car and never had a problem with the engine, but i live in central Qld where the weather is always Hot and most of my driving is highway.

On my VCT mtr in the AU with 81,000ks it has 5w-30w oil only on the cap. I only have been using fully synthetic oils Shell ultra at first. I'am using fully synthetic Penrite 5w-50w now days.
The only time I've ever used a engine flush was on a relatives EA who never looks after any car and had never changed the oil for 5 years only top ups . One thing with a flush is you only idle the car for 5 min not drive them. But yep i got to agree if you use good oil and change the filter there is no need to use engine flush. ghiaman |
