hey everybody.
I am in the process of rebuild No.2 on my xd and this time i am going to work the motor a little. its done 245 000 klms i already have all the parts for a cam and head change. just wondering if i need to open the bottom end i did a compression test on it today here are the results cyl 1st test 2nd wet test 1. 140 psi 150 psi 2. 170 psi 170 psi 3. 155 psi 155 psi 4. 150 psi 150 psi 5. 150 psi 150 psi 6. 135 psi 135 psi it blows blue smoke on start up but no other time at all, except black smoke under full throttle but im thinking that it needs a ring kit put through. wats the cost on a re-ring kit anybody know?? any sensible advice will be noted P.S. if u have a 250 alloyhead crossflow that u dnt want that u know has a decent-good bottom end give me a hoy i might be interested in buying it thanks |

I assume by wet test you pumped some engine oil into the cylinders. I also assume you held the throttle open for both tests because I have seen inconsistent readings due to a closed throttle.
If the wet test is as above then you probably do not have a ring seal problem. This indicates poor valve sealing. The blue smoke on start up indicates guides and/or valve stem seals. The best thing to do is get a leakdown test performed on the motor. This will tell you how much actual leakdown you have in each cylinder and where it is leaking. Any respectable performance/engine shop can do this. You could also just yank the head and all will be revealed. |

I agree with Bert buy the readings I would think it would be seals that have hardened up on the valves. i've had X flow mtrs in the past & they are fairly reliable especially the iron headed ones. Also look at the rear vision mirrior for smoke as you take of from idleing. As seals that have gone would show up more smoke. With blowin rings the mtr would be smoking most of the time
