I just bought an EB 1 Fairmont off Ebay it has a 3.9, 4 speed auto, factory sunroof, power windows, cruise, digi dash, but the 3.9 has to go ! I am wondering if anyone has done this swap what would be required electrically to install The 4.0 + running gear from my body damaged ED XR6.

Any help appreciated.

Whats wrong with the 3.9?

Havent done the swap myself but would imagine wiring loom, ecu, possibly fuel pump, manifold if 4.0 is broadband, smartlock install if last point is relative.

would probably better of leaving the xr6 complete, definately worth more than an EB fairy!

The 3.9 has 330000 k's and the engine has not been looked after at all, the tickford was rear ended so the shell is being scrapped. I am contemplating putting the Tickford running gear into the Fairmont, as the fairmont doesn't have smartlock I wouldn't fit it. Basically wan't to change the engine, auto, diff and appropriate ECU's but hoping not to change any wiring unless necessary.

if the 3.9 is multipont injected (probably is) its no different than swapping it for another 3.9. Just unbolt the manifolds and accessories and push them aside, lift the 3.9 out, drop the 4.0 in, and bolt everything back up.

i did the swap put a series 2 eb 4.0lt into my 1991 ea that had a cpi 3.9lt,had to change every loom in the whole car,it had no smartlock so that was good, but the only thing the same was the engine mounts,if the series 1 eb has the same wiring as my late ea,which i think they do,you could be up for some work, but you got all the bits there so why not do it

it doesn't matter if the doner car is mpfi or cpi,,you just bolt your bits to the engine and off ya go,,the same with smartlock,,it's not built into the engine,it's part of the vehicle electronics.

My cousin has done it, he had a EB I Fairmont 3.9 and put a EL 4.0 and EL Injection in it (he has the wiring diagrams),
now he has put a AU engine in a ED Fairmont with EL injection
