Can anyone tell me what the differences are in the 3.9L heads.

Apparantly the EB series 1 head with the 6.. on the front flows better. Can you tell me why ?

Does it still have the "swirl" on the head.

the ports and the valves are the same on ea/eb/ed the only thing different is that the ea 3.9 has a smaller combustion chamber...
so if you were to put a ea head onto a eb your compression would be higher...

There must be a difference between the heads or why do all the saloon car racers go for the 3.9 head with the 6.. stamped on the front.

the 3.9's have a swirl edge whereas the 4.0's dont.

Im not sure exactly what the difference is, but there usually isnt a hell of alot (by that i mean not a noticable amount from the drivers seat). They may even just be different production runs of the same head.

Because they are so restricted by what they are allowed to do in the saloon series every tiny bit helps. They flow test dozens of heads to find one of the few that come out the castings with that little bit of extra potential.

what i would like to know is where the extra 9kw comes from that the 4.0L has over the 3.9

the 3.9 has a different cam and a oh so slighty smaller bore.
otherwise they are the same as far as i know..

surely the 40cc difference and the cam alone isn't enough for 9kw?

the 4.0L dosen't have that much more aggressive cam does it?

i always thought that the 4.0L had different ports

There are lots of little differences between the 3.9's and 4.0's. Few things off the top of my head are the crank, pistons, head, cam, rocker gear, and probably a much more refined tune.
