anyone know were I can get some universal stainless steel exhaust flanges to suit 3" pipe (I'm after 2 pairs). The rest of the exhaust system is stainless so I'd hate to skimp out on the flanges.

Its common sense to talk to your local exhaust shop as they have different sizes to cater for individual needs.

The difference between pipe and tube is where they are measured from...

A pipe is measured ID (inside diameter) and a tube is OD (outside diameter).

Pipe is generally a vessel (holds or flows something) thats why they are Measured internally. pipes have a constant ID regardless of thickness. Thats why the are measured internally as they normally are utilised for flow.

tube is gererally structual, thats why its measured Outside Diameter. A tube will normally have consistent OD but the ID will change accordingly.

Thats why we its called an exhaust pipe and not exhaust tube.....

And yes you can get pipe with thin wall too, Its not just the thin stuff they call tube......

the reason why Pipe is generally considered heavy is that for alot of applications its seamless (ie no join in the wall), to make seamless pipe is completely different, and requires a reasonable wall thickness otherwise it tears when it is being extruded.


I work as a boilermaker/Pipefitter and I'm quite passionate about it, especially when misuse terminology about something they dont know.


but yeah an Exhaust joint should have Stainless flanges, if not mark out a template and get a couple of slip on flanges cut on the profile instead. A bit of oil on the face of the flange (on your header I assume) and press it onto a bit of cardboard should do the trick.

LMAO....pipe is measured nominally.....ergo...nominal bore..50mm pipe isnt 50mm ID, unless it heavy wall pipe.....as you should know but obviously dont...and all pipe is same OD, and obviously different wall thicknesses will make ID different. What sort of pipe bender former do you use to bend heavy wall pipe???.......i'll answer it for you...same one u use to bend medium wall pipe with.......

On topic....any exhaust place should have S/S flanges for any size exhaust diametre...

Ok.

1. I dont know anyone who actually tries and bends heavy wall pipe, they use elbows for that.

2. Nominal bore came about as metric came into place. you'll find that a 3" pipe schedule 80 will be designated as 89 NB pipe. Regardless the NB, it still is a 3" pipe internally (where in the real world it is taken into account).

3. As for pipe Benders, you are either making exhausts, handrails, or pool fencing if you have a use for a pipe bender.... I'll leave that stuff for T/A's. Generally its light gauge pipe or tube, you wouldnt step up the wall thickness size for the sake of blowing a seal in the ram...

But If you have Seen how many Dies are required to roll pipe you will see how a wall thickness will change the size of the die needed. A 6" pipe will have a Die for each thickness (schedule) as the wall thickness will effect the outside diameter. No you cant use the same Die either for medium wall pipe.
