Went to an auto elec today to get my alternator checked on my EL Fairmont, he said it was charging around the 13.5 mark but dropped to 12.5 when i turned my sound sys up. He said it would be $300 to replace the alt and that it doesn't need it yet but its probably on the way out. The reason i went to him is because i finish work at night and reverse up the drive when i get home and that drops the voltage to 12 or so, which means i have to sit there idling for a bit b4 i can i turn the car off, which is annoying an a little embarrassing when i have passengers. I turn my sound sys off 2k(5 min) before i get home to top up the battery, but it doesn't seem to help much.
Evan on short trips in the day it can drop to 12.5 or so, which means when i get to were im goin again i have to idle for a bit at charge the battery. Also when i put my air con on i the head lights dim. I have a yellow top battery that onlt 12 months old so its not the battery. . . . I hope. Its more annoying than anything but was wondering if there is a cheaper alternative or if it will actually make a differance putting a new alt in. P.S. I don't have my sound sys turned up at night i do have some respect. |

You can get 2nd hand ones which are still in working condition for about $100. At wreckers they usually give you a 3 - 6month warranty as well.
or try ebay. New alternators don't even cost that much I bevlieve. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ford-6cyl-altern ... dZViewItem phong =P~

...$300 fitted i reckon is still a bit much IMO. Only need to remove belt and a couple of nuts. Shouldn't take more then an hour or so.

My Last one cost me $50 with a three month warranty. They are piss easy to put in yourself. Three hundred sounds a bit heavy to me. Try a high capacity battery too, keep us all posted.

blue,
Get an EF 110amp alternator and put it in yourself, much less than an hours work saves heaps, even including buying a workshop manual. As some above have said E-Bay or wreckers for 2nd hand also E-bay for fully reco'ed EFs for less than half your quote. If 110amp isn't enough, get one second hand and take it to an autolec to get it rewound to 120amp. Shop around for prices but cheapest is not always the best, look at the warranty. Paul

just for your info i paid $120 for my one to be rebuilt, that included install etc etc.
i would guess the EF ones are more expensive due to them doing a higher amperage

ReGie,
If it's dearer it would only be a little bit more. [Your cluster cog made the post on Friday.] Cheers, Paul

New alternators at 110amp go for between $350.00 - $400.00. Reco exchange from most places is around the $250.00 - $300.00 mark. I know as I just got nailed for this a couple of weeks ago. Bets to get yours rebuilt, ring around and get the best price or pick up a second hand one.
