I wouldnt spend $3000 on a headjob if youre name was paris hilton, bucko. I think that price is just a tad on the high side. You can buy a recoe'd head for $500 - $700 exchange from REPCO which is guaranteed tickity boo and has a 12 month warranty. $80 for a VRS, $80 for a water pump, $75 for the head bolts, about $100 worth of parts to make a radiator flusher which takes all of 2 hours to build and stuff it, about $30 for a timing cover gasket and another $40 on sundries. I dont think the problem is that people dont know the difference between righty tighty and lefty loosey, I think they are just scared they'll make a boo boo of it all. No wonder wrecking yards are full of cars that have sfa wrong with them, the people are scared of C**k it up, and don't want to spend a motza paying professionals to empty the kiddies trust accounts. Theres always another unemployed mechanic looking for a workshop. If your guys are a bit precious, piss em off and hire someone else. Its the customers that drive youre business, not the staff. No customers through the door, no pay for overpaid and underworked mechanics.

At work we used to charged a for a falcon headgasket change and service the head for $900 but now due to prices of machining and prts has gone up to just under $1400.This is in a space of a few years.

To service a head and a gasket kit is around $600 to $800.If the head needs new guides or valves you could be looking for more than $800+.If your head is cracked we either get it welded up or get onto a second hand head suplly for $100 to $150.

As for the sump,it is a big job in the E series as you have to drop all the front engine crossmember and also the steering rack.I have done many sump gaskets and also a few dented sumps replaced.

Also is a big job to do the sump in a AU/BA as well.So either vehicles cannot be done in 1hr.It takes roughly 30min to 45min to remove the sump once all the components are removed to make easy access to the sump.Then need to clean the block face properly and also clean the sump.Then to reseal the new gasket and sump/bolts.

Our engine builder we use takes him a total of 1hr to fit a sump to an engine he rebuilds.And none of his engines have ever leaked.Sounds like alot of time spent on doing the sump.But if you follow the instructions of the sealant it will take you about an hour to properly seal the sump.

I have done a couple of front timing cover gasket sets,what actually leakes are the O rings located behind the timing cover they shrink and start to leak the bolt located near the tensioner is the main culpret.

For a standard rebuild roughly $3500 to $4000

Who gives a s**t if its a 5yo thread? I was replying to what the millionaire mechanic was saying a few days ago. There are easier ways to change a sump gasket in an E series than dropping the frame out btw. Problem is, mechanics trained by the dealer never get to figure them out as they have to do it by the manual.
