had a major service, tyres and air-con done yesterday for a nice $988 and in that he said my 94 EF falcon has an oil leak from the timing cover, cylinder head and sump and he sez $3000 to fix them is that right?

this is from the big tickford place in Melville Perth!

Yeah Dave 3K sounds about right - If you were
getting a re-conditioned motor to solve a couple of leaks!!!!!
Sounds very steep to me.

Sump gasket is about $30. Fitting time for someone with the right tools about 1hr - $60 = $90.

To get an oil leak fixed on my EF cost me about $100 all up. If it's leaking oil in the cylinderhead, it's valve seals and or guides. Rebuild a head is about $200, plus head gasket, plus labour to pull off and refit - Approx $500-$700 for the labour.

Let's see, going on those estimates of mine, that's about $1200 all up. Let's say $1500 to account for if I've under estimated some bits.

considering you can't get the sump out with the engine in the car. you'd need more then 1hr to fit it.

rebco a head is min of $350 up to $500

Lets look at this properly shal we..

leak from head. only 3 places it could be. headgasket rocker gasket or top timing seal..

we'll asume its the head gasket as a seperate leak from the timing cover was listed. you looking min of 700 up to 1100 for gasket posibly full reco head depending on what is found once it's off.

sump gasket cost 30 for gasket.. to options to get the sump off

1 take the engine out.
2 drop the subframe off.
both would take roughly the same time to do. we'll put 6 hours there
$528 for labour

timing cover say $30 for gaskets and an hour to fit while the sump and head is off

sump off means drain the oil so $35 for oil.
environmental fee for desposing of the waste $4

so depending on the hourly rate you'r looking at anything between
$1750 and $2000

the question you should be asking your self is is it worth spending that much money on the engine.. when for a little extra you could get your self an ITS engine

does the car drive fine as is?

If so I would take this as a warning that in the near future you need to spend some cash on a new engine. I the mean time start saving!

excellent thank you for all your comments and you all pretty much have my view, but one thing i wanted to delve more into is this ITS engine, what is that?

i thought that's very expensive for an oil leak, i can do the sump myself, but anything beyond that is beyond my skills.

i would like and prefer to get a better engine that has a bit more grunt as this one is kinda tired.

Cheers fellas and girls if any!
