Probably better to use exhaust tape externally. Im looking for alternatives to coat the whole intake including airbox. Anyone know how to make styrofoam spray?(ha ha) But seriously that'd be the s**t!

You can buy flexible sheet of aluminum from bunnings. you can even use building insulation around the PVC then wrap the aluminum sheet around it. seam/joint facing down!

I was thinking of using thin styrofoam panels inside me airbox, u see how well the stuff works for coffee cups it would work a treat inside an airbox, I reckon.

The pipes get hotter than the airbox though as the'ry closer to the engine. The alum sheet's a good idea but id only do it if it looks really neat too. Still looking at some king of spray on coating/foam.

Heres a thought.
http://www.spec-net.com.au/links/link432.htm Some kind if metal lined/reflective fibreglass matting can be wrapped round pipes including bends and secured with cable ties. Bout as neat as youd get it i think.

the i6 intake is too long! by the time it passes through the pipe, and goes through a very hot intake manifold, what gains can you get from insulating an air box?!
the temp of the air outside of the car is what matters, if its a hot humid day your just going to suck hot air anyway, no matter where your air pickup is, or how insulated your air box is, an insulated box is just going to be filled up with hot air anway...

If you have the bonnet space, you could get two pipes that can slide over each other, space them out evenly, then spray expanding foam from binnings inside the wall.

Insulating the new pipe should be pretty easily done with a heat sheild?
Im going to have a stab at this mod, ill let you know if i can whip up something that works nicely to stop the heat, maybe a 1:1 scale traceable image? Ill see what i come up with

the temp of the air outside of the car is what matters, if its a hot humid day your just going to suck hot air anyway, no matter where your air pickup is, or how insulated your air box is, an insulated box is just going to be filled up with hot air anway... the air box is biggest adder of heat to air. if you do a search you'll find thread where i messured the temp at different point in the intake. there was a bigger change from outside temp to the temp at the exit of the air box, then there was from the exit of the air box to the TB by the way temp at the TB was alomst 80c |

just use any fire retardent foam ,shellys space invader is a common 1.
your local hardware or electrical supplier will def have . it i think they even sell it at coles. get some roof saking ,you know the blue and silver paper crap.get this for free from building rubbish. it makes a big diff in temp under a tin roof so i imagine a car would be the same. you could stick it to the foam when tacky or even glue or screw when solid or attach it first and use it as the form work. do it 1 side of your box at a time and use some cardboard or ply as form and spray the foam in between.that way you get an even finish,let it set for 24 hrs to be safe and whalla insulated air box, cost $16 precious a few degrees priceless. does ne1 have suggestions for better or insulating pipes |

I did this a while back. My custom intake.
All i did is run a 80mm pvc pipe replacing my el pipes ($5 from market, as bunnings and others didn't have 80mm pvc). Then i got an ef air box lid and i cut the internal snout and made it like the el but having the 80mm intake all the way) (Ef lid $10 from the wrecker) Then i added an el gt snorkel ($35 from ford) sprayed all that gloss black and fit a k and n panel filter. It has the induction noise to it and not even a pod. You can hear it breath.. And Looks Nice and Sweet. What i would like to know is do you really need another 80mm or larger whole to add more flow into the box? Does that make the snorkel close to useless?
