Hi All

I will jack the car back up on the week end to check the kickdown cable,

I have also had the stuff in the trans pan identified, it is a friction plate or part there of.

I am thinking this transmission may be rooted.

are friction plates hard to replace?

Regards

After mentioning that you found a chunk of somthing in the sump I'd probably say it is the bands have streched.

Id look at getting it reco'ed. Put another 500k of life back into it. Or source a (unknownly) "decent" secod hand box, probably unlikely to find one in much better nick than yours.

Is the shifting issue up or down? If it's not going back when you boot it I'd check kickdown.

But if it isn't shifting up, that's the usual sign it is dying slowly inside..

Call around a few transmission joints and get some quotes. It's ringing a bell, change from $1100 was a basic quote a bloke got up here (Alice springs) so I'd guess (frikken hope!) there should be someone in your area who could do it for no more than that..

Also, do a little research on what a fordmodder can do to these boxes.

I haven't done one myself, so I can't tell you first hand how. See if there has been a trans supplement added to the collection of PDF file manuals.

Then work out what works best for you. Pay someone, or have a crack yourself.

Another one to research is wether you can even get a kit of some sort to reco it yourself...

I have called around and found one transmission joint here is doing them for 1100 and another is 900. the kit is around 400 so I think I might just get it done professionally.

Regards

Barry

of course there is a better way to flush it lol. Remove one of the cooler hoses of the radiator, put a bit of hose on the radiator, and put both hoses into a container, start the engine and it'll pump out the fluid, keep topping up until the fluid comes out of the hoses clean. Then put the hose back on. Use DXIII fluid as i stated above. Should work a treat

That's a good idea for a trans flush, pumps the fluid for you, probably half decent pressure too..

Another few reasons for getting it done pro is there should be a warranty on the work as well, it would be good for another 500,000 Ks, and it'll pretty much feel like a new one.

Or... For $900 you should be able to source the parts to convert it to a manual!

that's the way to do it if you don't have a specialised machine. Works a treat. My LTD, when i bought it, 1st to 2nd was lazy. Did a filter and gasket 1st up. Filled it, and flushed it the way i said above. Used about 10-15L (BTR holds about 12 i think) to get it clean. But shifted superbly after that, well, as good as a BTR will LOL

Do as troy mentioned adjust the kick down cable

Drive it until it dies then maybe do a AU BTR conversion mmmmmm a 4th gear so when you get 4.11 gears or 3.99s it wont rev at 4K in city mode

I believe the mounting points are in a different place for the 4 speed than the 3 speed, otherwise I would change it with the 4spd I have spare unless I get a 4 speed and ask the transmission specialist to install.

Has anyone done this before?

Are the Au 4spd compatible with NA series 1

I believe you need to custom make a rear mount / drill not to hard if determined

Then you need a wiring loom out of a BTR equipped car and a few little mods plus the borg warner trans computer i guess all that could be had for under $30to50 with some jewishness from pick a part

I am not to sure about other things though wanted to do it but my 3 speed is still immaculate lol

From my understanding I will need to change out the wiring harness for the transmission, the Borg Warner 3 speed is controlled hydraulically according to the transmission place so there is no computer controlling it. so I would have to some how build new mounts to fit the chassis then change out a the wiring harness and install a suited BCM for the 4speed.

The transmission place said that would cost a fortune and the saving I make in fuel over the life of the transmission would not cover the cost of the conversion.

is the 3 speed that bad?

Regards

lol. Of course it is. You have band issues, if the idle sticks high and you change gear the case can crack. Only 3 speeds. No overdrive. No torque converter lockup. Meaning you need tall diff gears and it makes your car slow as hell.

but if I change the transmission the diff will be different so that means changing the whole thing. the transmission is not a direct fit either it requires welding new mounts on, changing harness, computer. all this would require an engineering certificate and modification plate to do. also would it not still be gutless given the diff is not the correct one for the transmission?

Keep in mind i am considering getting my transmission rebuilt, so with a 3.9L engine how much benefit would i get out of a 4 speed transmission over a rebuilt 3 speed?

also has anyone made mounts for the 4 speed? i am not fantastic with that sort of modification and my concern would be that if i did that it would fall off the car.

Could i simply remove the mounts from a 3 speed and put them on a 4 speed?

is there some sort of instruction someone has made for this conversion?

Regards

Barry
