Hi
I have a ford NA fairlane and I am having an issue with the transmission Basically when the car is in first gear it will not change to second unless I release the accelerator and let the rpm drop down, at this point it will bang into gear. it changes from 2 to 3 under its own ability. a little noisy but on its own. does anyone know what this issue could be? Regards Barry

Hey.
Nice to see another NA on here. If it has only recently started acting up, and is still selecting gears itself to an extent, I would probably check fluid levels first. If that looks ok. Then I'd get a Auto Trans Service kit and replace the filter, and give it some new oil. Check the magnets inside of the pan while your there, see how much grey/metal is there. If it is pretty rough looking. The bands may be getting worn and need adjustment. A decent transmission joint should be able to service these, my mate says the old 3 speeds come pretty good with a pan kit and an adjustment. Or for the ultimate fix.. Convert it to a Manual!

Thanks mate Just checked the trans fluid and it is way low, it is at the bottom end of the ADD on the dipstick, I will see if I can get some more fluid and top it up. will also look into doing a service kit, as it has done over 300000K on original oil, is it very messy? Regards Barry

I have filled it up to the "ok" line, and it is still not changing gears so I will have to drop the transmission fluid and open it up, clean it up.
Does anyone know if this is an over the counter part?

Its available over the counter at Bursons/Repco etc. Ryco Part number is RTK8.

bad earth? changing gears? mechanical auto? not related. I was also told by a auto guru years ago that if a old three speed BW gets a bit sad with age and kms. service it and a full flush. but refill with DexronIII. Not the Ford fluid.
Worked on my XF. It started dropping into neutral on take off. Did the above. Was sweet for another 2 years after

NA my bad. I was on the mindset of Au for some reason there. Haha.
I've been told that if you use some oil stabilizer after a full flush and new fluid it can get a bit more life out of them. Note that maxlife is the same as dx3 and usually cheaper. |

not exactly. Maxlife is slightly different. But in saying that, i worked at a Holden dealership when i had my XF. So DexIII was a plenty

Yea it's is slightly. But maxlife is a guarantee replacement for quite a few other fluids too. I like it.

Hi All
I have dropped the fluid and cleaned out the pan and filter. One notable thing i found was a slip of gasket or something sitting in the pan. looked like gasket paper that one would put on the manifold or something. Replaced the gasket, filter and fluid, the fluid i found in there was almost black. after changing this it does not bang into gear like it was but it still wont change from first to second without taking foot off accelerator. should i at this point drive it to a transmission place to get them to check the bands? are the bands something i can do myself? Regards

What fluid did you use? Did you do a full flush? Or just a s**t quick oil change? By your post, i'm gunna say the latter

I dumped the oil that was in the pan and transmission, about 3.5L worth
I followed the instructions in the service manual so is there a better way to flush it? the fluid I used was dex 3 fluid. that is what I was advised to use by Repco Regards

I guess if you can live with it maybe just do anther pan drop and filter in a month or 2 to try clean the fluid even more |
