Hey guys,
Anyone know which engine has the stronger crank / rod combo in stock form for turbocharging? The 4.0 or 4.1? I dont really want to poor a load of money into it but id like to see 12 - 15 psi with the right fuel / igntion retard control. I dont mind throwing a set of after market pistons into it just as long as I know the stock rods can handle handle a small amount of boost. I dont feel like throwing a set of Carrillo's into the thing etc. Also are head gaskets a problem with either engine? Im sure nothing an ARP kit wouldnt be able to fix. Anyone have any links to any turbo builds on these older 6's? Thanx in advance guys, have a good one. |

It really depends on what car you want to put it in, and for what purpose.
You can't put the old 4.1 crossflow in and EA onwards for example, if it is to be street registered. BenJ

I havnt purchased the car yet, I like to do a little research before I jump in. I will buy which ever car has the best base platform to start with. Its going to be a weekend joy ride car.

BenJ Thanx for the reply Ben, but I guess thats where maybe yourself and I are different ... I dont choose a car / bike for looks, I want to know what the platform of the engine is like, as like all my motorcycle / cars are turbo charged or have nitrous oxide, so having a good block / crank combo helps save some money with less upgrades. Il keep pokeing around this site and others, il find the info I need. thanx for your help. |

OK, well for the E series and AUs, the best block combo would be the AU series III. This has better designed rods, and the pick of the bunch would be an E GAS (Straight LPG) block. In addition the crank has extra mains bolts and I believe a girdle. The cast aluminium sump is designed to reduce NVH and adds to the torsional rigidity. The AU engines are smoother and rev nicer than the E series blocks, although the EL blocks are not far behind.
As for head options, you can use your pick of the E Series and AU heads on the AU block. There are a variety of opinions as to which heads are the best from factory, but if you are going to get head work done, any of the EF/EL heads would be a good starting point. There are a couple of options for boosted applications with turbo and s/charger kits available. You can of course use the AU engine in any of the E Series cars, and probably could also convert one to fit in an XD-XF or a Cortina of your choosing. Hopefully, this is more the sort of information you are looking for. Cheers BenJ

Why is the 3.9 not in this question? Aren't there a heap of EA owners running boost with these motors and pulling pretty good numbers.
Hey anything can be boosted with time and money. I have seen diesal turbo's pulling some outragous numbers.

Yeah.. my wife's hilux surf turbo diesel 2.4 pulls some really outrageous numbers... try 35 seconds or so on the quarter... that's outrageous.. Toyota should be ashamed of themselves... slow a$$ piece of crap. |

Late ED blocks are actually EF Blocks, and have the additional counterweights on the crank for improved balance. AU blocks are stronger by design. BenJ

AU rods are weak. The blocks should be alright.
I havent seen an E series motor throw a rod but I know of at least 5 AU motors. AU block with BA forged internals would be my pick. Or a BA if you have the cash. For a stock motor'd setup I'd choose the EF or EL. |

What about an AU Egas block?

Egas BA motors have stronger rods. Not sure about AU ones.
They do run higher compression though which is pretty gay if he wants to turbo it straight up without pulling the engine apart. |

Just use the au block with a ba rad and piston combo. If youwere to use the egas bottom end you would probly use a petrol head on it anyway.
