Just after every ones opinion on the two. I have a BA XT 4spd, been looking at BF xr6 6spd.. From what i have read the 6spd xr6 will have more acceleration then the 4spd XT but use more fuel.. This correct?
Other opinions? Thanks |

I believe the 6 speed auto uses less fuel.
Think about it. In top gear the 6 speed box will have a lower rpm than the higher reving 4 speed auto. Also having driven an F6 and BF with the 6 speed it is a way better and more responsive box than the 4 speed in my XR.

the 6 speed auto will have better economy all around town but on the freeway the 4 speed might be better (4speed last gear is 0.68 and the 6speed is 0.69)

6 speed kills the 4 speed everywhere.
my f6 is getting over 600 to a tank easy, mostly freeway but with a bit of a blat every now and again. plus forgetting economy its just a much much muuuuuuch better box. test drive one, you will want it straight away. you cannot even compare it to the 4speed, its night and day.

600ks to a tank is not that good im geting around 800 in my ba ute its a 4 speed the worst ive got out of it is 650ks i had it loaded to the hilt in the back and i have a cannopy on it so i can fill it up . plus a fully loaded 6.4 trailer.

They would sit at something like 1400-1500rpm at 100k's then i guess

No need to ask questions... If you are comparing boxes, 4 speed - s**t... ZF 6 speed - legendary.
Use your extra pennies and get the BF with the ZF, its pretty simple. Plus you cant compare a BA and BF for fuel consumption, the engines are that much different. BF will outstrip a BA everyday of the week in that regard. Mods, this thread can be locked now, the question has been answered. |

Was in Perth recently and rented an FG XR6 with the 6-speed auto for a week. What a sensational transmission! When you put your foot down, it's always in the power band as the revs don't drop much on the up change. It's almost linear.
The problem is you can only experience it in first and second - after that you rapidly get into licence-losing territory. Overtaking on the Albany Highway was awesome! Coupla times had to brake hard after pulling back in - it put on much more speed than I expected. The only niggle was the amount of torque it pulls out to smooth the up-changes is quite noticeable. It would be much dangerously good with an electronic shift kit to tighten it up. I wonder what it would take to transplant a BF engine with 6-speed auto into my EF XR6 wagon?

Not in the Fords, the 6 Spd manual is a bit of a basket case, has got better with the FG. All the XR8's I had when working for Ford where manuals as I preferred to shift gears myself but it was not a great box. The 6 Spd auto is light years ahead in technology over anything else out there. Is the basic box fitted to BMW's, Jaguar's and the like.
In the last BF Ghia I had prior to leaving Ford, I was getting 6.5 / 7 L/100K on the freeway and when I handed it back after 15,000 KM I had averaged 9.1 L/100K of varied driving. |

Does your vehicle have a bigger than normal fuel tank, bazz? Short wheelbase BA-BF sedan standard capacity is, I think, around 68 litres. If it has a bigger tank you would get more km per tank but of course it would be dearer to fill right up. |
