any ways back to the point i noticed in a blokes thread he compared ef and au con rods ef to be 5.88 and au to be 6 (from memory) i was thinking of running them to get a compression gain given valve to piston clearences are good along with piston to head clearnences has anyone done this or seen this, are the conrods compatable?

I am assuming that you are talking 5.88" v 6". that is a difference of .12" or 3mm. Check that with the clearence of your EF/EL pistons to the block deck.

I was told by a mechanic who ran an I6 EF at speedway that he was using AU rods - but I don't have any solid info... They were also running a "solid" cam - ie. with manual type adjusters instead of HLA's in an extensively worked head and were working on a multi TB setup with Hawk engine management.
Be clear - by only doing the rods like that you'll only be increasng comp ratio - it's NOT the same as stroking - which is about the crank (and then rods matched to it to make it all work right).

the other thing is will it be a straight swap over as in balancing of the rods etc? im planning on building a motor for my xh ute out of an ef fairmont i travel a 86km one way to work so needs to be reliable and also i dnt want to be spending endless amounts of money |

Pick any two.
