Hey -
I recently aquired an EF 6cyl Futura Manual.... Ive driven ef's and el 6cyl and V8's But this is the most powerfull one of all of them (ive owned 2 v8 EL's) and its only a 6cyl The previous owner (Owned it since new) says that he has never done any performance mods other then a 2.5" exhaust... He said something about the head cracking a while back and an AU head and head gasket was put on - but it is surely not enough to make it faster then both the V8's ive owned And also i raced my mates VT 5.0 litre commy - and left him for dead... Any idea's? The car has only done 120,000km's... And as far as i can see - its stock as a rock...

A hybrid engine can produce nice powers but not as much as an 8...Best bet, your previous 8's were broken in one way or another, while the low km I6 is in great condition with a lighter body? phong =P~

Before I got my current EA, I test drove a few 5ltr cars. 2 X Fairlanes (EF/EL era) and a VR Exec 5ltr. They all felt really heavy.
For this 90's generation of Holden's and Fords I think the 6cyls were very good. They had almost as much kw as the V8's, and weren't too far off in torque. The Falcon 6 makes a heap of torque and is a lighter block than the V8's. My bone stock EA holds back a mate's filtered and zorsted 5ltr VR Caprice for a bit.. You could be lucky like me and have a really healthy donk in your Falcon. Last edited by locknut on Mon Jul 23, 2007 7:31 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

i use to have a eb xr8 with the same kind of mods as my ea like exhaust, extractors,k&n filter, snorkle ect.
the ea is a manual with 3.08 ratio and the xr8 was auto with 3.45 ratio and the ea is still 1/2 a second faster over the 1/4 mile than the xr8.. i must admit the v8 has a nicer sound and a better torque range but over all the 6 cyl is still faster lol |

One of my V8's was a Tickford EL Futura
The other was an EL Fairmont Ghia But both were very healthy motors The Fairmont had done 150,000km's But as stated above - Fairmonts are heavy... But the tickford Futura would still be slower than this - by far im very confused (In a good/happy way:P)

If this gives anyone some idea of what it is like
when doing about 30-40km/h in 2nd gear if you squeeze the accel - at about 3/4 throttle the rear wheels smoke up... and i have 18" x 8" rims.

Yes the manual box is the key factor here, i found a huge difference when i converted mine.
Not sure about spinning the wheels when rolling in second though.... I mean, mine has some work done to it, 138kw @ wheels, 3.7 diff ratio, and i cant get the wheels smoking like that !!! |

What is the stock gear ratio? From factory - were there any 'options' for more performance or different diff ratio's or ANYTHING... Im not very knowledgable about cars and stuff but here are some things i have noticed... 1. Very lumpy idle 2. its pretty quiet on idle - but when it gets up in the revs it becomes VERY loud. 3. Has heavy duty clutch and from receipts if have found in the glove box has a strengthened gearbox... Had a friend drive it today also - He has an EB 6cyl manual and its slightly modded - runs a 14.83 1/4 mile - and he says that mine pulls much harder right through the rev range...

Only other thing i can think of - is the tyres - these are brand new tyres - but maybe they have very low gripping power...

every now and then out of the factory comes a car where everything is perfectly matched and balanced and goes harder then the rest. mate once had a auto vn lexan like that no v8 could keep up even left my ef II fairmont ghia manual with preformance mods for dead.

I guess this could be true
But VN commdores suck they have 127kw and most V8's made from mid 80's through the 90's had 165kw minimum... but like i said - could be true... the ef falcon with 157kw is only 8kw away from the equivelant model V8, Being a ligther car and in the manual transmission would most probably put the 6cyl in the lead, and with slight mods would leave the v8 for dead If i am wrong here - please correct me... Cheers

1. Very lumpy idle This could be a major contributor to the increase in power. Just remember pretty much all the e-series falcon 4.0L's were faster than the 5.0L windsors apart from the ELII/XHII XR8 185kw and of course the EB GT, ED XR8 Sprint and EL GT. As far as the rear wheels lighting up at 30-40kph in 2nd gear and applying throttle goes, is that both rear wheels or just the one? If its both, wanna swap cars coz theres noway mine will do that in the dry and thats with almost 300hp at the wheels and a s**t leaf sprung rear end.

Take it over the 1/4 mile, things might make more sense then...
