I keep getting ppl asking me about achieving a nice idle with a cammed up 4L, so......

what i have found to work is...
(for a cammed up 4L falcon with a std ecu)

*warm car up

*take off isc plug

*if the idle dies, screw IN the idle screw 1/2 a turn

*start car again, if it doesnt idle and dies again screw in screw another 1/2 a turn.

*now the car is idling (probably a bit too high), screw the idle screw out untill desired idle revs or untill it starts to struggle to keep revs up.

*turn car off, plug isc plug back on. Start car to check it idle ok now. Should be good.

*Set the TPS voltage to 0.6-.07 . You may have to elongate the screw holes to achieve this.

*now disconect the battery and whipe the ecu out

*there are two ways to trick the ISC: 1] run a switch to it so you can turn of and on. Usally left on when the motor is cold or if you have the aircon on. 2] make a new gasket for the isc but the holes alot smaller (usally make this before you start to ajust the idle, you can get it fairly close. You can increase the holes untill a desired idle rpm is present.

*now after whiping the ecu, and have done one of the two isc "tricks", reconnect the battery and start the car. it may idle and drive a bit s**t for a while as the ecu is still learning. But for the first 2 mins let it idle, dont drive it yet. Then idle with aircon on for 2 mins, then if its a Auto, idle in "D" for 2 mins. In doing this it "learns" the idle. Also play with the power steering, full lock to full lock as the ecu has a idle up for the power steering drain on the motor.

PS: i have also heared that you can drill a small hole in the throttle body plate, which is kinda like a permenant ICS. By drilling it small and enlarging it untill it is spot on.

I do find that with a larger cam, a slightly higher idle works very well!

I cant remember exactly but in D my XR idles at about 400rpm? Does that sound about right and when its in P it idles around 600-700rpm and its very lumpy at that lol.

Does this sound about right, idling wise. I did what you stated in your first post some time ago.. But ive always wondered if the idle rpms seem a bit too high or low for that matter?
