I've been running penrite hpr gas 20w60 in my EB II since owning it for the last 15 000k's. In an attempt try and boost the oil pressure which didn't help much as it still only sits around 1/4 bar on the gauge.
But recently having the head completely reco'd less than 2000k's ago kind've now thinking I shouldn't be running such a thick oil. I've got a couple bottles of penrite 15w40 and was wondering if it would be ok to switch to a thinner oil viscosity, given I've been running it on the thicker stuff since I've owned it? I have no idea idea what the previous owners used unfortunately.. |

How many k's has the block got on it? My Ef, I changed from Nulon 15/40 to Penrite and had countless problems. Went back to Nulon and she is fine. I have read Penrite is renown for producing sludge and allot of people ( including myself) dont recommends it.
The Viscosity will depend on the k's of the block, not only the head. If you do decide t change, Id recommend Nulon oils. Great quality on a cheap a** budget ( $25 for 5L) |

My EF has just ticked over 387,000 k's and Iv'e been running Nulon 40W 70 for the last couple of years and have brilliant oil pressure with NO detrimental side effects . I change oil and filter every 5000 k's religiously . I don't know much about Penrite but will sing the praises of Nulon till the cows come home .

20w60 is way too thick and will put excessive load on oil pump..not to mention increase fuel consumption.Try a good quality mineral or even a quality synthetic 15w40..if it is too rattly or burns oil then try 15w50.I run Castrol Magnatec 10w40 in my ef XR6 with no issues at all(does not burn oil,no rattles, lifters quiet at start up, and oil pressure is perfect),but it only has 159000km,is not on gas, and has had oil changes every 3000 km since new.Used Nulon long life fully synthetic 10w40 recently as well with no problems, but engine runs quieter and smoother on the Castrol Magnatec.Have not used Penrite yet so cannot comment on it.
As for low oil pressure,it is better to fix the cause as changing to thicker oil may cause other problems. |

15w 40 should be fine for the eb, the only advantage with the thicker oil is if your engine it really tyred and suffers extreme low oil pressure from worn bearings.
ive used penrite for years and never had oil pressure problems or sludge issues, except on engines that were already near f**k, i was running penrite hpr10w 50 in my au with 260'000 km with no issues but decided to drop a grade lower to see and its now running penrite hpr5w 40 and no changes in oil pressure, one thing that has improved is the fuel economy from using thinner oil.... |

lol @ all these people telling him it's too thick. It all depends on the wear of internal components. All you can do is put thin stuff in it. 15w40 and see how it is at cold start and operating temps. I ran a 20w60 HPR 30 in my EB. Was too thick. Dropped to a 15w40. Too thin when it was hot. So went to a 15w50. Was awesome all round.
All you can do is trial and error.

First post dude km don't always have a bearing on it, engine component wear does, eg, my old ea;s original engine had only 200k on it and had oil pressure issues out the yin yang even with 30w 70 oil due to bearing clearance issues, my current au has 260k and can run 5w 40 no problems, I know a certain eb that has over 430k and also runs 5w 40 oil with no issue.. |

I just popped in some Penrite hpr-30 20-60w in to my EL yesterday as suggested by my mechanic, but i'm sort of concerned about the thickness of it. Have I made the right decision or is it too thick?
She's done around 207k's and goes through about a litre of oil every 2000 k's if that changes anything... |

If it goes through a litre of oil every 2,000kms.....then the thicker oil is for slowing that down. Original Ford spec is 15W40.

I just bought a daily s**t EA Ghia with a 3.9 MPFI and 305,000kms. Had a lifter tick when warm. Put in HPR30. Quiet as a mouse now
