I've got a finger that don't work properly now cos I used a cheap socket to try to undo a headbolt on i6 motor.....thats why you need good tools.

does the AU gasket increase or decrease compression?

I shall also take note of this when I do my head gasket on my EL...=D and thanks for the heads up...looks like I'll be investing in a rattle gun and a compressor. sorry to steal the thread a bit here...I've seen rattle guns of all sorts and sizes...and there are some with variable torque settings. If I was to get one with no variable torque controller...does that mean I can only undo headbolts, bolts or anything and have to do the bolts in by hand so that the bolts don't eat away the thread? phong =P~

Nah, dont use rattle guns on heads, you need to take them off slow and steady. You do need the tough sockets they use with the guns though. They wont break and wont round the bolts. Just a 14mm bolt, a breaker bar and a bit of pipe for more leverage will get the head off every time.
I dont think ive actually ever used my rattle gun on an engine.

stockstandard, would it be possible to use the E series head bolts (and 2 AU gaskets) on an AU engine if i want to lower compression?

I dont think ive actually ever used my rattle gun on an engine. yeah wouldnt bother with a rattle gun you would have to have some nice gear to get a head bolt of anyway. i actually remove my bolts with my torque wrench as it has a long handle seems to make light work of headbolts actually, dunno if this is a good idea as its prob stuffing the wrench lol |

yeah my brother used to go nuts when I'd borrow his torque wrench to undo head bolts
Tocchi: going from memory the AU head gasket is around 3X thinner than an e-series so you would need quite a stack of them to decompress an engine. I seem to recall a couple of people using 1 on each side of a decompression plate for boosted engines.

yeah ok thanks for that. because i will be boosting my XG (EB/ED 148kw 8.8:1 engine) but later changing to AU engine and box (9.6:1) |

Ok, so use a 14mm impact socket, but not an impact gun, I am gonna get the head skimmed, should I ask for it to be skimmed as much as possible to increase compression, or is this being silly? Is there anything else that I may as well do while I have my head off (not cam cos of insurance costs).
