How do you adjust the timing like everyone says to do when you run higher octane fuels? My EF is running on L.P.G. and occasionally Premuim Unlearded 95 RON (we don't get 98 in Tassie), should I bother adjusting the timing? And if so, how do I do it?

Well not easily anyway.
Have heard of adjustable brackets being made to do this, or the other option is a unichip or something.... |

An aftermarket ecu will let you do that. But I'm sure there must be a way of slightly advancing the timing. I know alot of jap sixes have ajustable crank/cam angle sensors

As far as I know that the roundish black sensor near the oil pressure sensor, but closer to the front of the car. Anyways, it's got a sticker on it saying NON ADJUSTABLE... |

that black thing with not adjustable on it that sits in place of your dizzy is your cam angle sensor for the ecu to determine what stroke each cylinder is on. The crank angle sensor, on the front of your timing cover and about the size of your thumb is not adjustable due to the nature of the brackes that it sits between, the only way would be to modify the front of the timing cover as Voxace said. Its a bit of a s**t really. ECU is probably the easiest however modification will be the cheapest at the cost of some pretty severe patients when trying to set the timing up

Twr, yeah only 2 options with your EF (or 3 if you feel the need to go aftermarket ecu on a stock engine, lol).
Adjustable bracket for the sensor (no idea how to do this, used to be a few posts back on FM v1.0) or a unichip.

ok well sorry to kinda hijack the thread.. but i got a EB xr6 and i wanna adjust the timing i got a timing lite lying around somewhere... it always runs ultimate so i should be able to get a bit out of it... but if someone can give a detailed description of how to get to the dizzy then rotate it would be nice...

They are in a bit of a prick of a spot on the EB but not impossible. Read up in your workshop manual or maybe some one else here can give us some insight, but AFAIK you need to put the ECU in to self test mode by jumping 2 points in your diagnostics connector, then you have about 30 seconds to set the timing to the desired position. It would of course be a good idea to have the dizzy bolt undone first prior to starting. Its a 13mm-1/2" socket and a long extensoin jobbie down through the intake runners. Have fun

Why are the ef's so difficult but the el's are so easy just loosen the retaining bolt on the dizzy and turn....
Pretty easy

cause the EL runs a conventional dizzy where as an EF runs a coil pack and fixed crank position sensor that identifies when to fire the coils

Ive never had a problem with my EDIS setup on my EF but some will argue that they were problematic. The EL may be a little better from a modding point of view as then you can easily adjust the timing to suit cams, fuel, comp ratio and so on.
