Thats 100% untrue. Look at this too. You want to make sure you are getting it correct.

By reading that link, I have to wait 2 minutes until I can set the timing, then I have 2 minutes to advance the dizzy or I have to start all over again?

IF that was where your mark was at. at idle. with it in diagnostic mode. and when the timing light flashed. that timing would be extremely retarded

Is this true for advancing the timing, if you turn the dizzy 1.5mm it equals 1 degree?

I ain't no f**k window licker . What I am saying is yes u can alter the timing but the Ecu will take over.
Have a read ford-4l-and-6-cylinder-f1/

the ecu does control the timing but thats adjusted from the base setting,
the factory base setting for el is 0 deg, but the ecu map at idle is around 20 deg btdc, so at idle the normal ign timing is 20 deg.. now advance your base timing to 2 deg btdc and the ecu map is still 20 deg but the normal timing is now really 22 deg because the base timing is 2 deg advanced... the ecu always thinks the base timing is correct and does not know if its advanced or retarded... thats why it will ping if you advance the base timing to much, advance the base timing to 8 deg btdc, now the ecu map will still idle at 20 deg because the map never changes, but now with 8 deg of added base timing the real timing is now 28 deg btdc... |

How far have people gotten before it gets knocked back? Does it vary from car to car?

mine was advanced 4 degrees and I was using BP Ulitmate98. I'm sure it could be advanced a little more but the tuner never tried.
