Just wondering how far is safe to advance an EL while running on premium unleaded fuel.
Would about 10 degrees advanced be safe, considering the knock sensor can back it off? I am pretty certain the EL ECU can control the base ignition timing by +/- 4degrees. And does anyone have the distance on the harmonic balancer for this left of the timing mark. Would 1cm be about the right distance, left of the timing mark?? I have advance the timing before and noticed a gain but backed it off again because I was worried about doing damage to the engine! I am also so running Bosch xr6 spark plugs which should be able to handle the hotter combustion temps!

i got mine advanced 6degrees and noticed a heap more torque down low. I can only run premium now though just incase the its starts to ping. My plugs need to be changed aswell because at first it felt really good and now its sort of loosing its responsivness

Well I advanced it about 4 degrees just to be safe. Very happy with the results.

Yea i was shocked at the difference, i couldn't beleive somthing like that could make it feel so much stronger down low. did you feel the power pick up down low much quicker?

Yeah it spins up alot easier off the line and feels stronger off the line. I don't know why i have been stuffing around on different intakes when this has made a better improvement..lol.. The timing was found to be about 1-2 degrees retarded. So yeah bumped it up a bit, even the idle quality is alot smoother.

An LPG mechanic recommended i fit NGK BB6EY to my dual fuel 6cyl. Any thoughts? [p.s. i am having somewhat related timing troubles, refer http://www.fordmods.com/forums/post799572.html#799572 ]

Gday guys, Just wondering if you are using the "short the top left pin to ground" method from the manual to check the timing? 2 EL's I checked the timing on today were gutless when I set them "by the book". I just ended up setting them by power... not the best idea as a general rule...
See ya, Jim |

f**k! if thats 4 deg advance, i must be running about anywhere from 10 to 20! i just happen to find a light the other day and i checked and the timing is WAY out. still get relitivly good fuel econony tho. just get absolute s**t house performace

Short the pins, start car, revs rise then fall, wait another 2 minutes then motor nearly stalls. Now you can check the timing. 1.5mm on the balancer equates to 1 degree advance. mines about 6mm from the centre mark, so yeah about 4 degrees advanced. I probably should have taken the photo from the side not right on top of the balancer, the distance is a bit deceptive. If it's 10-20 degrees advanced the knock sensor via the ECU is only able to retard the timing by 4 degrees max. Your engine should probably be pinging at high rpm under load up a steep hill? Do you get pinging? Cheers..

Im sure thats why yours is not going so good.
