Isn't the auto box loom part of the engine loom? It appears to be on the engine I have here. If I follow the box wiring it takes me to the big plug next to the fuel rail. Does this need to be disconnected?

thats correct, in el the trans loom is part of the engine loom..

So in theory, once all is disconnected and I have an engine crane.... I angle the box down and pull the engine and box up and forward? No work today, too damn sore and not a good idea to try to work on a raised vehicle while under the influence of pain meds.

Pretty much. Just put some rags around the engine bay so you don't accidentally scratch any paint of the body work. When you start to raise the engine, the transmission will weigh it down and angle itself slightly...should give you enough clearance. Not sure if you have done so, but removing the bonnet will be a good idea at this stage.

Get yourself a peice of ply or something similar and place it in front of your AC Condensor when you lift the motor. It will stop the motor from slipping up and punching a hole in the condensor.

When you lift it all out you may need 2 ppl to lift the back of the gear box over the radiator support and 1 person pulling on the crane as you may find the crane will probably max out and the back end of gearbox still hangs below the rad support. A load leveller is a handy accessory if you have one but not neccesary.

Another tip I have is to remove the sway bar d-brackets and lower the sway bar. This will make it easier to get the trans over the hump on the way out and re-installation.

Thank you all. The bonnet is off. Is it also worth dropping fluids to reduce mess and weight? I am pulling the tailshaft today and putting ply in front of the evaporator.

It may be worth draining your transmission fluid if you don't have a gearbox stop off bung that goes where the tail shaft comes out of to stop tranny fluid spewing everywhere. They're cheap as you can get them from supercheap for like 20 bucks. Saves wasting your trans fluid.

Sounds good to me, I gotta go there to get a lube pump bottle anyway for the diff oils on my MU so I will grab one then. Also bought a rattlegun, air ratchet and air hammer same as the 3 pack supercheap sell but only 80bucks from bunnings - supercheap want substantially more for the exact same product. For that price I dont care if I only use the stuff a few times a year, just saves time and my back too :D

picking up engine crane tomorrow, dropping the auto pan and i will be saving the fluid and re-using it as it is only 2-3 weeks old. going to use a clean container. i might try siphoning as much as i can from the bung first, then drop the pan.

I am not bothering dropping the engine oil as i can't use it now. I will get it out later and filter it and run the MU on it.

thanks everyone for the help, it is going to make things so much easier and I won't be stabbing around in the dark as i now have a fairly good idea of what to expect and what needs to be done.

That's so much more effort than just putting a gearbox bung in the back haha.

Did you just say you were going to reuse your old engine oil? Like in another vehicle? :/

Can't get the bung at any of the auto shops here and I don't want to damage the seal in the extension housing with anything I made up. Yeah I run my diesel Isuzu on used veggie oil, used engine oil and diesel. I am trying to save money here...lol

If you have a spare driveshaft, you can cut the slip yoke off the end and use it as a gearbox bung. :wink:
