Yeh a cut off tailshaft would be ideal. Just need to
See if he has one laying around which he may not unless they want to wreck a perfectly good tailshaft

No spare tailshafts....
I got stuck on the tailshaft bolts. They're locktited with blue colored stuff. I got 2 off with the rattlegun but the gun isn't strong enough for the other 2. Should I try heating up the nut or just stuff it and cut them off?

Heat them up if you can, the loctite may weaken a little. If not, get 2 spanners and tighten it a little. might crack the loctite and then undo. I just used spanners, took an effort and a few whacks with the hammer, but it worked. If not, soak them in WD40 or something...might rusted together?

Got a mate to kick the spanner while I held it in place. Done.
Tomorrow evening I will have the crane so I can undo the engine mounts and gbox x-member mount thing.

Update: engine crane is in place and chained to the engine ready to lift.
Question: I have a trolley jack under the gearbox mount so when I undo the mount it doesnt hit the floor. Will I be able to get the lot out with the jack under the box?

Yep. Undo the mount from the car and lower the jack until the rocker cover rests on the fire wall. Then when you are actually getting the engine out, the trolley jack will help the whole lot roll forward without dragging the gearbox on the floor.

Is that with the wheels on the ground or the front jacked up?

Is that with the wheels on the ground or the front jacked up? If your car is standard height, you can do it with the front on the ground and the rear up on ramps. Since my car is XR height, I had it so the front wheels are just off the ground.

UPDATE:
It's in...... finally. not much to it really, the hardest part was lining the engine back up with it's mounts. ripped the firewall cover a little and bent the brake lines on the firewall a little. but yeah.... it wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be, thanks to everyone who gave me advice, it made the whole operation go smoothly. all thats left to do now is: re-connect heater hoses, auto cooler lines, fuel return line, and starter. re-install the tailshaft, install engine oil filter, add oil, fill the auto back up and the coolant. then all will be well in the world. (mine anyway) pictures to follow later when I upload them. thanks again for all your help and input guys.

The Crane :
Commence Lift-off: Engine and Box are out: Empty engine bay: Gearbox and engine separated: In comes the new engine: Moving the engine in place to bolt the gearbox on: Gearbox bolted to new engine: New engine and box going in: engine and gearbox in and bolted in. most of the work is done!: the gearbox shot its load underneath the car....... oops. i had the extension housing taped up but the tape fell off: Nearly there guys, not much left to do. missus is happy which in turn makes my life more enjoybale. I am pretty pleased with myself and hopefully when the key is turned i will get my share of satisfaction. Great experience, I learnt heaps doing it.

Good work . It is a tedious job, but once it is in, connected and started, the feeling of satisfaction is just awesome. Hope all works when everything is connected up.
Regarding the hard line for the brakes...how much did it bend? Hopefully not bad to the point it will affect your braking.
