SO after a week diagnosis my car is blowing a lot of white smoke with a tinge of blue on startup for about 20seconds. Been checking oil and over the past 2 weeks it has gone from just under 'full' all the way down to right on the 'add' mark....
valve seals? How much am I looking at to have this fixed, and is it damaging to drive it in this state?

sounds like stem seals/ comp test would tell more but for a temp fix, use a generic brand high viscosity (thick) oil

A compression test won't tell you the condition oil rings.
but yeah fill it full of an Xw70 or Xw60 engine oil, like Gulfwestern Comp50, valvoline XLD Hi-vis, Fuchs Titan formula 60 |

leak down test will show oil rings though. But probably like alot of falons out there, had a hard life, given alot of curry and not always observed the service intervals.

Doubt it man, bought it off a single owner dude who owned it since new. He was about 50, had a full service history(with ford dealers) and the car was in mint condition when I got it, stock standard. I just did a flush and change to Penrite 20W60 about 3 weeks back ... Thanks for suggestions

Thanks for suggestions i had the same problem with my original engine in my ed.. it had full service history, was 1 owner from new.. i think the fact that it was babied its whole life then sat for 12 months, i brought it, serviced it, started moding it and started driving it a little hard, changed head and gasket because of a leak and within a week it was blowing smoke like a smoke machine... so imo sometimes a babied engine is no better than an engine that is driven hard... |

Ah cool, thanks for that, I've been given mixed reports as to what a leak down will and won't show. If the motor is anything like my EB was, you will be able to find your oil rings in yout sump!!

Many years ago, a mate bought a car off an old guy, one owner, had it 20 yrs, too old to drive, sold the car. Anyway, the mate thrashed it, and it wasn't long before it started blowing smoke....and just kept getting worse. He asked me to rebuild the engine......when I took the pistons out, I didn't have to try to get the top rings off......they fell off in about 5 pieces ! The old guy babied the car from new, so a lip forms at the top of the bore after a period of time.....then a young feller gets it, thrashes it....the piston is now stopping further up the bore, hitting the lip, and breaking the rings.

cjh...so the moral of the story is...don't sell a good car to a young guy till they grow up, sell them a $500 bomby, let 'em thrash that & laugh 'ya a** off while you put their money in your pocket...

I still reckon valve seals are worth a look - maybe do a compression test, if OK then have a look at valve seals
