the short black line usually goes to the plastic tree on the water neck of ea or eb1 for your air recirculation inside the cabin.when the engine temp reaches a certain temp it switches your aircon from fresh to recirculate.(im not sure why but the manual says its for cooling efficency). but it was made obsolete in eb2 and ed..

my one is just tucked away.

Ahh - on EA1, XD, E, F's etc when the engine got too hot it would just switch to recirc, to ensure that your A/C did as little as possible.
