After a recent trip on badly corrugated roads the air bag light came on the dash of my 96 XH I6 Longreach ute.
Now, when starting it goes out ..then flashes ..then remains on constant. Any ideas on a fix ? |

Count how many flashes it does, this is the problem code. One of the most common problems with them is the "clockspring" fails.

Thanks. So, count how many flashes before it goes constant ? |

It will do a series of flashes 1,2,3,7 etc then a brief pause and do another series of flashes. That is the code. It will then repeat this sequence 3 times then go constant. So 3 flashes, small pause 3 flashes equals code 33 which is a passenger airbag fault (which is what mine does even though I don't have a passenger airbag).
cheers Scott

It will go through the fault codes (2digit) and then go through them a 2nd time. Codes less than 52 need to be fixed, codes above this can be reset without repair.
I've had code 33 on my XH - pulled the 2 ohm resistor and reinserted it, then got code 52, reset the system, no probs.

It's funny, my AU flashed a number of times for the first time on Christmas day. Did it all 3 times we drove the car, and hasn't done it once since then...

I had code 18 .... something along the lines of open circuit with loom under the driver's seat.
Usually this connecter under the driver's seat comes loose ... just unplug it and plug it back in. Fixed my problem. In the AU it's a yellow connector ... not sure in previous models though.

ive found that the ones under the seat are only for cars that have side airbags that are situated within the seat i dont think ef,el have side air bags as i put leater interior from a el fairmont ghia into my ef fairmont and neither had side air bags and ive only found them on au onwards while i have been workin for ford dealership here in brisbane

The clips under the seat are connected to the seat belt pretensioners ... nothing to do with side airbags (as my AU doesn't have side airbags .... actually no AUs had side airbags).
The pretensioners are hooked up to the airbag system ... there is anoth cable under there that is hooked up to your seat belt buckle to say it is engaged as well. They work kinda like a gunshot cartridge in an accident ... really pulling back on the seat belt and locking it when needed. They pack just as much a punch as an airbag itself.
