Hi all,
When I bought our ef, the previous owner said the air con compressor needed replacing, just wondering how you can tell it is definately the compressor and not just needing regassing or an electrical problem. thanks Cory |

With the engine running look at the pulley on the front of the compressor. The outer should turn while the inner stays still. Turn on ac. The whole thing should turn now. If it doesn't either the compressor is seized (and the belt will slip) or there is an electrical problem.

If it is out of gas it wont turn either as there is a cut off switch. Generally the compressor lets go at the front seal because the a/c system got too hot and over pressurised. If the compressor has a lot of oil around the front just behind the pulley it is a good bet it has failed. Some a/c guys will do a small charge of a/c for about $30 to get the compressor to run. If it all leaks out they can use the sniffer to find the leak. Or if the PO had dye put in with the last gas charge they can have a look for the dye under UV lights

Went to an air con specialist, he said if its leaking behind the dash about $800 to pull the dash apart and fix, if its at the condesor $600 to pull the bumper off and fix it, if its the compressor $1000!
That seems crazily expensive to me. Anyone else had theres checked/replaced lately? Cory |

Theres nothign hard about the job if you were going to do it yourself - its just labour to undo all the bolts and hoses.
A second hand compressor from the wreckers will set you back no more than $120, and if its the condenser behind the dash, thats about $100. Labour will take a day at least. You can check the condenser yourself. Pull off the glovebox, remove the two screws that hold in the blower motor resistors, and inspect the box for leaves and other crap that gets caught down there. Heres a pic of the part you'll need. As you can see, mine was rooted.

thats a photo of the evaporator not a compressor. compressor is the big silver belt driven thing at the bottom in the engine bay on the passenger side. condensor is the radiator thing behind the bumper and the evap is under the dash.
the reason the bumper has to come off is because also hiding in there is the receiver dryer. a RD is full of that silica gel stuff u get with shoes(do not eat) and as soon as the system is opened the air stuffs it. also it's the system filter so it's common sense to change it whenever possible. if you dont know what u'r doing then dont try it yourself. apart from that it also against the law to touch your a/c unless u'r licensed to do so. the laws have recently changed and now they're as strict as f*** either way it's gonna be expensive so brace yourself

Heh. funny that! I did all my AC myself on the EB (it had no gas left in it from the leaks). I replaced the evaporator, got it filled, and it leaked, because my compressor was leaking as well Did they bother to decanter (capture the gas) at all? Nope. This is one of the most popular radiator/ac places around, and they just don't bother, like most companies i'd imagine.
(Can't say their name, cause they didn't charge me for the second refil!)

i changed my evaporator at the end of last year, wasnt too hard a job, just some stubborn bolts that made me sad! lol
Problem was the mob i bought all the parts through gave me the wrong sized o ring for the tx valve. so within a month or two it blew out. (gas everywhere) fixed that and a few weeks later it f**k out again. ive given up. i drive with the windows down now!! lol btw, the quote of $800 for an evapporator sounds about right too. |
