If you go the re-oil type make shore you keep an eye on it as i have seen a v8 go to crap after it sucked bits of the filter in when it dryed out.

Hmmm, look at High Performance Motorcycles.
What filtration do they run? Oil/Cotton and Oil/Foam, why? For one thing they are less restrictive with air flow, while the larger particles (ie dust) get caught up in the rather tacky oil... Go the K&N........ |

ryco baby ... meets all aust industry standards. comes with the car. recommended by mechanics. Why bother witha K & N not unless your cahsing every last KW.

I have found that ryco air filters are good under all driving conditions.
I noticed with the K&N panel filter it gives you intial gains when the motor is cold but when the airbox becomes heat soaked the metal mesh that covers the K&N filter gets extremely hot and thus warms the incoming air. The ryco paper filter doesn't get as hot in the airbox and therefore i have noticed alot better performance after 30mins of driving with the ryco over the k&n filter. my 2 bob anyway....... |

Im not concerned about the increase/decrease in flow and the resulting performance. My question is in regards to which do you trust to provide the cleanest possible intake your engine could ask for.[/quote]uni-filter..................by far the best reusable filtration you can get!
flows 1% less then K&N but filters right down to 4-5 microns of dust particle compare to paper{30 microns} K&N{45 microns} anything above 15 microns will do damage 100% australian made. This question has been asked before, with the same reply. |

Green Filters are well known in the racing industry, 5 micron filtration, reusable. Some say better than K&N! http://www.greenfilterusa.com/why.asp I have one, very happy with it. |

What are Aust Industry Standards? Please tell me what they are? The point is not chasing Kilowatts, the point is to unlock the effieciency of the Motor Vehicle you own. Cream on the pie is the performance if you desire to utilise it. eg. Why run extractors? Lets see "Aust Industry Standards" sell the motor vehicle with a pretty substandard exhaust, right? Manufacturer rips it off, on goes a breathing assembly, new chip and a SUPER BAdge on the side. |

Read a good article on this site about how the K&N and other oiled filters & how they can end up clogging the "Idle Speed Controller"
Think its mainly the E series? Others may know more on this????????????????? Causes rough idle-trans surges at change- etc, etc! I got a "Big Mouth" cleanable hi flow filter for $45 on eBay. No oiling & lasts 10yrs.(Made in Italy by SS inductions)

This is my impression of paper versus k&n . . .
Paper: better filtration easier to remove most contaminants (suck or blow most s**t out without oil sticking it there) cheaper, at least intitially, if not overall less overall hassle flows well and you can modify the intake for further reductions k&n: Less filtration equals more flow and noise regular cleaning a comprehensive hassle do you keep the car long enough to justify the investment? may compromise resale

Valvoline Paper - Seems to work best for me, for both 4WD and EL
Change them every 6 months.

a well looked after oiled guaze filters will do a very good job. just remember the harder you drive the more often you need to oil them.
These tests where they do comparo's ive seen them to, dont take em for gospel, some of the methods are questionable, some use a peice of white cloth and a 'Look" measurement to decide which filters more. some are sponsored and conducted by companies themselves. Just service the filter every 5k klms and it will do fine. never use too much oil or it will suck into intake coating things. paper wont filter as good as the k's go by, as bigger and bigger holes (we are talking micron size) are punched in it by high speed particles. get a 5k air and a 5k oil filter and i bet its a different story on filtration. paper is used by manufacturers because its cheap, and recomended by mechs because its a regular swap, and thus source of income.

unifilter.
easy to clean, uses mineral based light oil for lubricant. so really doesnt need "special" oils. Most rally people use them because of there filtration in dusty conditions..... only one I could trust to do the job properly
