Gday chaps,
Do you prefer to use OEM paper filters or oiled filters such as K&N? What is your reasoning behind your choice? Pros & Cons of either type would be appreciated also. I have a dilemma that needs to be sorted ASAP! and your repsonses will help my cause... I know in my mind which one i prefer and the reasoning behind it... I would just like to see others opinions and experience before the s**t hits the fan...

Hi South . my preference is paper elements ,
1. they are alot cheaper than K&N types also they do a better job as far as I am concerned. you can change them more often if you want. a new paper filter will pass as much air as most cars will need especially do your air induction. cost of paper filter $ 10-15 cost of K & N $ 130 aprox plus around $35 for oil kit each clean this is a must or you will be up for a new motor.

if you're using a entire cleaning kit every time you clean a K&N filter, you're doing something wrong

I only just got my k&n a few days ago $99 so thats what 5 paper filters. At least when I sell the car I can sell the k&n and get some money back as well. I thought the cleaning products where optional i mean you could clean it without them

you HAVE to oil them after every clean. K&N filter can be bought cheaply off ebay, I got a brand new one of $20, and a second have one with little use for $5, there are copies available as well but these could be dodgy.
The cleaning kits cost about $30 and last ages, K&N work out cheaper than paper elements and they have a 1000000km warranty. I prefer K&N, may have slight performance value but i got it because i can clean with ease and wont have to buy another filter |

May I say that the difference betwen "standard" air filters and After-market air filters is so minute that it is hardly worth worrying about. This has been said more than once, both here in these forums, and out in the "real world"

it has also been seen that some OEM filters flow better. Get a K&N if you like the idea of being able to wash your filter instead of replace the old one

Im not concerned about the increase/decrease in flow and the resulting performance. My question is in regards to which do you trust to provide the cleanest possible intake your engine could ask for.

When on my work placement at a boat place, they had the k & N cleaner kits (or oil kits what ever) for $20, but they said if i go back there i can have one for $10.
So i may be investing in a K & N filter in the near future.

i recently fitted a BMC filter to my BA XR6 with the tickford intake snorkel. I notoced its slightly more responsive on take off and getting slighly better fuel economy. Bout 0.5l/100k's. If you like your car you wont be bothered cleaning the filter every year or two.

for the best dust filtering. paper filters are the way to go.
it's been proven by independent test. i'm sure it was posted on here some time back to. my whole family has K&N filters in their falcons. works out cheaper in the long run.... clean them with hot water and morning fresh dish washing liquid.. and the K&N oil in the spray can last for years |
