I installed my BA airbox and crosspipe into my EL today. While i was doing that i decided to do an extra mod to my airbox inlet.
I found an old upper radiator hose, off my XF wreck i think, and with a hole saw drilled a hole just smaller than it into the front lower side of the airbox, just below the normal intake. I could then jamb the hose into the airbox and it was tight and sealed. I then squeezed the other end of the hose into the hole above the chassis that is about 220mm in front of the airbox. This gives an approximate 25% increase in cold air availability to the airbox. I haven't checked if the hose sucks in, but i really don't expect it too, especially as the hose is old and stiff. The results of all of the above mods is a noticeable improvement in power and willingness to rev, but most noticeably an increase in smoothness. I also expect a reduction in fuel usage. A downside is there is a harmonic from about 2500rpm, i'm guessing due to the rad hose. Since the car cruises below this it won't be noticeable to me when except when i accelerate or overtake. It's not loud. Cost $0. [PS, I am running the std EL snorkel, it fits to the body better than my BA snorkel and flows almost as good.]

I promise i am getting there, . . . i do intend to get a digital camera soon!
The hose has some slight bends in it, i might rotate it and see if that reduces or eliminates the harmonic.

how are you measuring 'flow' ?

What you mean by "there is a harmonic from about 2500" ??

I'm assuming he means like a humm or something from the air entering; I put $10 on it being from where the air enters the hose, but will needa see pics first. Also how is flow being measured? Remember cross sectional area is proportional to flow, but not equal. Hehe get some pics up, and change the thread name!! Sounds like an ebay mod

putting in extra hole in the air box could possibly lose ram air?

I very much doubt that this mod has achieved much.......
The BA Airbox mod will be the thing that has shown improved results...... The biggest issue with your intake will not be the cold air intake, but more likely the filter in there!!

PIMP_LTD wrote: What you mean by "there is a harmonic from about 2500" ?? It's a sound. It's a bit like a whistle, a bit like a turbo whistle, maybe some people would get excited by it, but i don't know. By-the-by i also ran my au motor recently with only the crosspipe fitted, i only ran it for a moment and didn't drive anywhere, just listened, and there was a harmonic then, not much different to the harmonic in my current setup, just a bit louder. I thought there would be heaps of induction roar, but there was only really the whistle!?

The pics won't really show where the air enters because the hose is jambed into the hole above the chassis rail. Because there is a metal brace there the end of the hose is a bit squashed in, it's not round. Maybe that is the problem. The end of the hose has a small bellmouth due to having been clamped down for years in the XF! Quote: Also how is flow being measured? Sounds like an ebay mod The free hose even has some kinks which possibly makes it easier to fit! But it would be nice to try just straight hose, not that i will bother. The mod is just so simple and straightforward and quick and cheap and technically sound.

xfpaul wrote: putting in extra hole in the air box could possibly lose ram air? Right or wrong, my thinking on this is that by the time the air has passed all the way from the top of the bumper up that narrow gap to the snorkel inlet, it's turbulent and not travelling very fast anyway. And the inlet to the extra hose could/should have positive pressure too. The suck of the engine is so large i really don't imagine air passing out through the hose, or being stalled in there. The engine will just take what it can get the easiest, which will be a proportion of each. Too much velocity in one will make its resistance higher, so there is a balancing effect.

It's not new but i've blown it out and it doesn't look too bad. You think a new one might get rid of the whistle? Being a BA filter it flows easy, at least, it looks like it would, being an open weave design.
