gday all just have a few questions regarding the operating temperature on ef and el falcons, where they sit on the temp gauge?
i ask this because mine got hot tuesday and went right up to the N on normal to me this is odd as the guage only ever sits on AL on the guage, and yesterday the temp guage sat where it normaly dose. could the radiator cap or thermostat be on the way out? is their any tsets that i can do to make suer the thermofans are running propley? what else could be wrong the only things that has been changed befor it got hot wat the overflow bottle was replaced with a new one as the old one was cracked, and it has new coolant in the system cheers all

My EL temp needle doesn't go far up at all, and I live in Rockhampton which is a hot and humid hellhole. My guess would be the thermostat not opening up properly. Are you using any water?

When was the coolant changed? My guess is over the week-end? It could have just been an air bubble in the system that caused the high reading as you said it's sitting where it should be now. Just keep an eye on it, but if it's an air bubble it'll sort itself out.
Mine will sit on the AL normally and will go up to AR on a hot day with the A/C on. This is from the workshop manual. To test cooling fan system 1. Ensure engine is at operating temp. Trans in Neutral and all accessories are off. 2. Bridge terminal A (on the Diagnosis connector in fuse box. First pin top row on the left) and terminal B (Pin directly under A) and switch ignition on. 3. Shift trans from N to any other gear. Both fans should operate at low speed. 4. If the fans don't operate test the fan relays and motors. Hope this helps you out.

My temp gauge has gone up to O during a warm/hot day (25+ degrees) stuck in traffic. As soon as I get up to say 40km/hr for a 10 seconds or so it starts to drop. However I have never seen it gone up more than A on a normal driving day in any weather. It's only during free way parking lots that cause the heat spike.

Leave the cap on, but NOT fully closed as you do this (otherwise the pressure build up will stop this from working properly) and then top the coolant up to the proper level.

Hmm. Im starting to think my El might have a problem. Only ever goes up to M when it is working hard.
Other than that it sits on the bottom bar of the Normal guague (if that makes sence) As in, its not on a letter, it is lower than that. All the time. |

My advice it to dump your coolant, take the radiator out of the car, seal up all hose connections bar 1 on the radiator, get some CLR and add water. only ½ fill the radiator, hold your hand over the hole you just put water in and shake it all about. the CLR will dislodge any crap build up inside.
Leave it all to stand while you pull your thermostat out, put the housing back onwithout a thermostat and reverse flush your block and head with the garden hose until the stuff coming out the water pump side resembles water. it will still retain coolant/water in the heater core and what not, but don't stress. get your overflow bottle, remove it and clean it with CLR just like your radiator that is now soaking. put it all back together with your new thermostat. Spend some coin and replace hoses at the same time, don't be a tight a***. Return everything back to where it should be and install your new hoses and shizz. I complete flush my cooling system on each change from winter to summer and summer to winter. you can juust do it every 6 months if that suits you. Cooling system maintenance is often overlooked, we change oils and filters but neglect the cooling system, its just as critical. On the first fill do not fill with coolant, its expensive to find a leak after your backyard cooling system overhaul. just wait a few week, check that coolant levels are stable. if so, just dump the contents of the radiator and refill with good quality coolant. DO NOT MIX COOLANT TYPES. Why? Just don't. I service my system regularly, even in my s**t commute my temps so not get above A. Hope this helps?

Fit a colder thermostat, either 180 or 185f (83/85c). Stock is over 90c.. makes a noticeable difference.

Might look good, but they're alloy for a reason. They are supposed to corrode (or show signs of) before your head does. So each time you change the coolant it's good practice to take a quick look at the condition of the thermostat housing, you don't need to take the whole thing off, just remove the top hose and check the neck out. All this talk of checking cooling systems etc and I just realize I have no idea what condition the wagons is in. I know it's a fairly new radiator but last coolant change? I have N.F.I. when that was.

ok is it worth cleaning the old radiator or just replacing it with brand new?
