My alternator packed up in the EL. (the damn car was running for just 1 day after last drama!)
I want to get another from a wreckers = $38 is there any way to tell if they are stuffed before I install it? Also I heard the EF's run Bosch alternators that are better?? than the EL mitsubishi ones? Is this true and are they a direct swap? Any other ideas about what to do?

replace ur regulator on the original alternator!!
2 screws pull out push in FIXED!

I already asked a mechanic about this. Apparently it's an internal regulator on the mitsubishi alternators that can't be removed. (at least not without difficulty ie. +$180).
Any more ideas?

I MATE MY EF FAIRMONT IS RUNNING A MIT ONE NOT A BOUSH ONE AND MINE HAS DIED AS WELL THAY ARE VERY DEAR TO REPLACE

if the car has a p/steer leak, that will be the most likely cause of the failure.
They leak onto the alternator and cover the slip ring and brushes full of oil. clarkey - the mitsubishi alternators aren't that simple. I repair them every now and again, and to me they are simple, but they can be a b**ch. Personally i wouldn't go with a wreckers alternator, but years ago I did, and it was in perfect condition. They're a hit-or-miss.

Yeah it has slight leak, ie weeping from seals but alternator is dry.
Anyway is there any way to tell if one is good or not before you install it?

not really, but if it's covered in oil, i wouldn't put it on.

if the ef is a straight swap go with that as it is rated at 110amps where as the el is rated at 100amps.
and afaik ef's run an mitsu unit.
