Ok here is the story, about 6 months ago my alternator died (the volts were sitting right down and it sent interference through the speakers), i had the alternator rebuilt and everything was sweet again then after about 2 months it started doing the same thing (we thought it could be the stereo causing it) and they rebuilt it again under warranty, but now its done it again but i havnt been running the stereo in the car for around a month

Symtoms: Alternator makes a whiny noise, volt guage sitting right down but goes up a little when im driving, when a stereo is hooked up makes a squeeling noise through the speakers(more than likley because the rca's are near the power wire).

What could be going on???

By the way the first 2 times the auto elec said it was the regulator that had died

may be the windings are burnt our in the alternator, maybe the brushes are not put in correct ie: not inserted straight. Dont know, just thinking... may have a highcap filter breaking down at random points too... so many things to think of... may be see if you can grab another alternator of a friend or the auto elec to try for a few days.

Cost me 280 for a brand newy thru Repco, windings could be rooted, get another one, worth the money in the long run.

Assuming its an I6 are you also going thru Power steering fluid?
Could be that if you are its the power steering pump leaking onto the Alternator and destroying it.
Cheers
