Hi guys
my alternator wont hold in position when tensioning the alternator belt. the 13mm nut (u know what i mean) just spins when you turn it to the right. it never used to and im pretty sure ive tightened it properly since i had my AU motor put in. so at the moment i can only have the alternator belt so tight as the alternator just springs back after you tighten the belt with the 24mm bit. btw i have adjusted this a fair bit over the last couple of years due to my old motors crankshaft moving back and forth and snapping belts. any ideas people or anything i should check? as im going on a long holiday weekend and i dont really want any problems ie batt not starting. (i always keep spare belts) Thanks Heaps Ben ps sry bout the life story

Sounds like the thread on the alt is stripped. You should be able to use a longer bolt and nut. I have not done this on a E series but it was a common fix on the X series.

if the 13mm nut just spins when you turn it to the right it sounds like the thread has stripped in the alternator, if so heres a quick fix, put a nut on the back of the 13mm bolt where it comes out the back of the alternator do it up semi tight then adjust the belt (24mm nut) then when you do up the 13mm bolt at the front hold a spaner on the back nut that you added

i dont think the nut it long enough to put a nut on at the back as i had a feel back there, so i guess i can just take the bolt out and put another one in thats long enough? are they a special size or thread pattern or anything?
cheers ben

ok so i had a play at lunch and it dosent look like a longer bolt will fit as there is a matal brace behind where the bolt goes through. (does anyone know if it will fit) also i took the bolt out and it looks like severall of the thread peaks have squared off so it may just be the bolt.
does anyone have any ideas of what to do? or of where i could find a replacement bolt after 6pm SE melb as im leaving early tommorrow. otherwise ill just chance it thanks ben

i had the same problem, all i did was went to bunnings with the bolt found the the same size length and thickness and got a nut for it then did it up, works fine, and i did this about 5 months ago.
