Hey guys,
My nice optima deep cell yellow top has finally carked itself, guys at battery world tried to revive it but its still failing, So I've brought a GSYUASA 480CCA for $165 Unfortunately my Alternator is only pushing out 13volts while running (it should be at 13.5 - 14 im told). On the battery gauge with headlights on the needle is under the half mark... I drive a NL Fairlane 96 model. So where can I get a new Alternator? (repco don't list them) and can I use another model car? (BA, AU) Also is there a doc, or can someone right up how to Change the Altenator? Thanks - Ash

i changed mine 2 weeks ago its a piece of piss mate mine had two blots,,, just undo the wires that are cliped on and take the old one of and put the new one in its as easy as it looks

I would highly recommend you go and buy a Gregory's or similar manual.
It tells you how to do it with pictures. BenJ

It tells you how to do it with pictures. BenJ How much are they? yeah its two bolts... taking out the main belt... Does it come out from behind? extractor side?.. do i have to remove any of the power steering cables pipes? - ASh

contact eastcoast in ringwood, they sell reco alternators.

Your alternator may be fine you know.
My voltage gauge reads anywhere from 12.8 to 13.8v How old is the battery? its possible it just carked it.

The Optima Battery was 2yrs 3montsh old...3months outta its warrenty, pretty annoyned..so i brought another battery. The guys at battery world did a test with the new battery in and said that ur alt isn't providing enough power, n said your 1 volt outta its range which isn't acceptable..n will evenutally kill ur battery.. - Ash

I had that alternator recoed by a local joint for about 150, new reg and get the coils rewound.
Make sure you get the right amperage one - fairlanes had a 110amp one i think

This ones starting to go, did they reco the current one for $150? or did they give you a reco for $150? Cheers - ASh

no you dont need to take any thing of exept for the alternator its a bit of a squize with the power steering line but its fine take the belkt of then undo the two bolts and take the wires off and thats it

how i did it
removed the power steer pump fan plastic thingie (2 screws/bolts) off with the engine belt wack new alternator in plug it in inspect power steer pump for leaks put it all back together also im lead to belive that ef-el alts are ALL 110amp mitbushi alternators repco do sell brand spankers but priced at 380 and ba alts for 400 so it might even be worth looking for the mods done to au-ba alts coz the parts in the future will be more common and cheaper thats my 2 cents i changed my alternator 988km (2 weeks ago) if u need anymore help just pm me i'll do ya pics on what bolts go were etc cheers justin |

as long as they are the same volts its should be ok

I brought some new bushes for it, gonna wack the alt out and install em see if it helps..
