My alternator warning lamp is coming on (i noticed tonight). It is not constant, more of a on/off flick, depending on whether I am braking, indicating, etc....
The car starts like normal, it doesn't switch back on til i am driving. I dont know if I get the same result during the day, because it has only been noticed for the first time tonight... So is it likely my alternator is dead?

Otherwise could be a diode gone or regulator on the way out. Cheers TW.

sounds like a bad ground
Clean battery terminals and posts.. also clean the metal where the main ground is connected. Adding extra ground can never hurt.

for the best ground, i always try and use the neg battery term, or the strut tower bolts.

Sadly it runs from the Negative battery post to the drivers side of the block, just above the sump, around Cyl1/2

could it be that the battery is undercharged?

With the car running, pos lead of multimeter on pole at back of alt, and neg to neg terminal, show you if its charging, should be above 13.8 volts.

Is there an easier place to test it? The alternator on EF (and I assume later engines too) is in an absolute s**t of a spot. I'm concerned over the well-being of my alternator as well. The light hasn't come on (yet) but the voltmeter on the dash registers lower than the 14.4V it should when the engines running. Now, I know not to trust the cluster which is why I'm looking for a second opinion. I did a quick test with a cheapo tester from Tricky d**k and that said 13.2 but I only put it across the battery terminals so it's highly likely it was simply getting juice from the battery and not from the charging system. I have these visions of having to pay 600 bucks for even an aftermarket replacement so any peace of mind I can get would be helpful.

The alternator connects to the postive anyway, so the terminals accross the batery should read what the alternator is putting out. If 13.2 is your problem, then clean the terminals, and give it a rev, should go up to 14.2ish to 14.4. If not, check your wiring, grounds, etc... but maybe the alternator is on the way out.
Cheers

I'l try cleaning them off when I go home for Easter. I hope it's something simple like that, my dad did the alternator in his GLi a while back (funny thing is, it happened on the way back from taking my brother to some comedy thing in Perth and he made it to within a few hundred metres of home (a 75-100km trip) on battery power alone. He more than likely would have made it all the way had the cops not stopped him a k or so from home) and had to pay out the a*** to replace it.
