I've just killed my second alternator. Called RAC and the guy said a big amp can kill them quicker. Is this true? If not then what can make them wear quicker? This one was only like 5 years old.

Also I now need a new one. Are some better than others or are they all practically the same? I was just going to pick one up from repco or something. Is there a good manual on here on how to install them?

I knew I should have had that service earlier.

Alternator is pretty simple to replace. I found it easier removing the power steering pump first. Couple of bolts and unplug cables for the alt.

sorry. Forgot to put the details down.

It's a EF falcon. The battery is a megatron battery -530 CCA@ 18°C RC95 (don't know if that means anything)

The sound system is a pioneer DEH-P6550 deck, MB Quarts speakers all the way through. 2x 12" Kenwood subs and a Alpine MRP-F240 amp.

Don't know how to check for the fuses.

Yea i dont think it is the sound system i have an

Alpine 9887
2x Pioneers 12 Inch Woofers Being Fed 950wrms (so yea over kill)
JBL 60wrmsx4
Focal 165v2 Splits

and all of this is in an EBII Falcon so the Alternator isnt as good, the main issue is the voltage drops and spikes with my huge Mono Block capable of 1500wrms !

So just get a new one and don't change anything?

Are all alternators the same?

Just talked to some people. They said it could be the regulator. Something about checking if the brushes are worn down. The thing is I don't know what a worn down brush looks like.

is that from a single 12?
3000wrms at what ohms?
what amp you running?
and who measured it.

on topic here
in my old 86 prelude i killed alts running amps.
but not to much problem in the falcon, the main problem is the alt pully squealing when i start it up after pumping trax.
or during a sweep when the voltage drops to much and it squeals some more.

12"cvr taking 800wrms from a OA mono.
plus the speaker amp.
