Cheers

Hi ,
you can take it to the local auto electricians and get them to convert it to DELTA wiring configuration you will need upgraded diodes but cheaper than new alternator.

EF/EL ran a 110A alternator no idea though whether it will be an easy swap into your XF tho and not sure whether the 110A was stock on them or whether that was only installed with the tow pack upgrade/option

Don't know about the EFs but from the EL 6cyl service guide, the alternators are 100A mitsubishi alternators. What the! My boss from work just blew the alternator on his EL today thats how he found out they were mitsi alternators. He got quoted $650 for a new one and $350 for a recond' one.

i got a full reco'd mitsubishi one here, if anyone wants it, $150.
all ef's come with 110a.
my GLi had one, but i've now modified it with AU internals (which are almost the same but put out 10a more despite what the sticker says).

XF ghia's came with a 60A alternator.

There are alternators out there that put out 120a, and they're around $200-250 new. They're an industrial type alternator.
all you have to do is swap your brackets over (and possibly drill the positive post hole out slightly bigger.)
hope that helps.

G'day

I went to the auto elecs this morning and came away dissapointed.

I asked if it were just a case of changing the pulleys over, apparantly not. He reckons that i can change the pulleys, maybe having to machine the shaft. He also said that because of the size of the alternators that it wont be putting out its full capacity until the revs rise to about 2500rpm. He said that at idle it wont charge the system enough to supply normal operation, without the 200amp draw from the subs, let alone all the other electricle stuff i'm adding.
How can this be correct? if that were the case wouldn't it be an issue in all the cars that run these alternators?

As far as i can see the only problem i would have would be to match the pulley size on the motor and alternator to exactly what was on the car it came off. This way there would be no difference to the speed of the alternator shaft, would it not?

What you guys reckon.

Cheers

Half right! It would also depend on the size of the Harmonic Balancer or whatever pulley the alternator is being driven by on the orignal vehicle.

Thats what i meant, as long as the drive pulley and the receiving pulley on the alternator are the same i should be sweet.

Cheers

He's right and wrong.
you could fit a pulley with a smaller diameter so it spins faster, and therefore will charge at a lower RPM.
But the 120A internals of that universal alternator generally charge at a higher rpm, and not so much at lower rpm.

also, the problem with the way i described is you also run the risk of premature bearing and brush wear because the alternator is turning much faster.
what rpm does your engine spin to?

Get yourself an optima battery and you wont need a bigger alternator, unless your powering a house or something

G'day

All ready got an optima battery!
I'm doing this as an option for latter on if i have trouble, i think i might have to suck and see.

Engine may spin 5000rpm when the new one goes in but atm it never goes above 3500rpm (sound like its gona break).

Cheers
