the RB30E from the VL would be a good idea, it's smaller and still has decent power, with a good intake and exhaust it has good power and economy

looking at those pics i would actually use the EBII-ED motor with the log manifold. Getting a intake pipe from the T/B to the air filter would be harder and more expensive then it would be with the older style manifold. There *may* also be some height issues if you use the BBM as well

Definitely recommend the AU motor.
Very reliable, no head gasket problem, smooth as, and if you look carefully, pretty cheap. All the best with it! |

Serious lack of torque wouldn't be fun in anything that weighs a bit. I used to have a VL, I know these things

The intake side could get a little interesting but I can tidy that side up a little as well although there's not a lot of room. Longer is not a problem and I can extend backwards and forwards a bit if necessary. I should be able to find one of these at a wrecker locally to have a good measure up. fordzatmyplace wrote: Looking at those pics i would actually use the EBII-ED motor with the log manifold. Yep and that's where I'm at now. Listened to the wrong people when I was young and dumb doing the 186 and have no wish to go there again. Unfortunately online forums weren't a reality in those days so I only had a couple of "experts" to bounce ideas off.

another vote for AU motor. my AU motor in my EA has 300,000ks now and only had to change the belt pully's still tight as a new one. dont bother with EF/EL motor unless its the last of the EL's my mates EF has just done 143,000 and head gasket is F#$@*D

Sorry to resurrect an old post however it just makes it easier if all my questions are answered in the one post. It's been a little while but having got rid of all my woman troubles (I.E. Got rid of the woman!) I'm now back on track.
I've so far converted to front discs, have installed an EB Fairmont steering column and have removed and got rid of the old 186 previously mentioned. It looks like the AU motor is going to be a goer and we are seeing good prices for them. My question revolves around extractors and yes, before you ask, I have searched and read other posts. My question is this... I assume that aftermarket extractors stick out from the side of the block furthur than the standard exhaust manifold. Do all the extractors on offer stick out by roughly the same amount and if so roughly how much? If not then what would the brand be that hugs the engine the closest? I need to work out whether I stick with the standard manifold due to space constraints or can get a bit funky. Also how low does the bottom pipe sit? Does this sit lower than the sump, same depth or higher? Many thanks

Another question regarding the inlet manifolds. The AU has what I believe is called a BBM manifold. This is the curly one. Is it possible to swap this for the log style manifold of the previous version?
I'm just looking at air intakes the finished height of the engine and fitting it through the hole I currently have cut in the floor. Thanks

you can put the log manifold onto an au engine, it should bolt straight on and give you some more space.
what are you putting behind it? an auto? should be alot better than the old 186 once its done!

Thanks for that. That solves a number of problems for me. Just need to get some ideas back about the exhaust manifold / extractors.
Yep, it'll be an auto behind it. The van is just being built for cruising. No point setting it up for racing as they have all the aerodynamics and handling of a brick. This is what it looks like so far although it's kind of in bits at the moment while I repower it...

For simple ease of fitment.. get an EL motor...
If you get an AU, you'll need to source EL bits anyway unless you fancy wiring up coil packs and the like. |
