hey,
i have a stock EL XR6 and when accelerating it makes a whining/whistling nosie. it has been confirmed that it isn't the LSD and is believed to be the auto trans.... It only makes this nosie when accelerating in Drive, but isnt there when placed in 3rd gear or any other gear's.. i have been told it wont cause any problems but it is rather annoying. anyone else had this problem? any ideas if it can be fixed or wat to do or will i have to put up with it? any advice would be much appreciated thanks. |

It varies so much as it depends a lot on what you pay for fluid and a trans service kit [filter etc] plus labour. $150-$300 have been bandied about here.
I do mine at home and I think it cost about $150 incl the 95LE/TQ95 fluid [10l] and the service kit from Bursons. The method is outlined in any service manual and is very simple if you have stands or ramps to raise the car on. Once the trans is serviced it would be a little easier to try and track the noise if it persists. When it's raised for service check, or have checked, the torque converter to flywheel plate bolts [60 Nms], they've been known to come loose and make strange noises. Cheers, Paul

Ah... that makes sense - your title suggests your nose is making whistling noises when you accelerate (whistling nosie)

I had a 4 speed automatic EA Falcon and a 4 speed automatic VN Commodore, they both had this whining noise, turned out to be a stripped out 2nd-4th gear band. When the gearbox went into overdrive (4th) under heavy accelleration it would slip like the buggery and make a god awful eeeerrrrewwwww noise...if you know what that sounds like haha! Basically, gearbox strip down!

You'll never know what it is with out having it checked, just save time (and your gearbox) by taking it to a professional who deals with this every day, leave it any longer and you may not have a gearbox at all.

I have a whistling noise coming from my car. Had the transmission checked and everythings spot on in that department. Checked hoses for vacuum leaks and everything spot on in that department too. The diff is nice and quiet. In the end I finally found out what it is.....The air con compressor! The bloody thing might need replacing by the sound of it.
